So it's the beginning of January, what's your shed count up to so far this year?

So far, I'm at a big fat zero. Haven't been looking yet, but I'm sure some of you have been taking walks.

I'm just thinking that some of you are chomping at the bit and with the lack of snow in some places some of yous might be looking fer those early droppers. :-D Doesn't hurt to get some exercise and fresh air. I'm probablly starting this thread about a month too soon, but you never know, there are always a few guys who get lucky early on.

All the bucks we have seen are still packin, I have a shed pile in the house with the big ones, moose sheds are in the garage and all the dinky rat sheds are behind the garage in a big pile

Here is an example of one i did this year. The fresher the shed the better, although I can take ones that are solid but discoloured.
My shed count this year is ZERO, I hope to go after some elk sheds up past campbell river later on.

Only found a handfull of sheds last year. But I went and checked a very small ridge where I know the whiteys like to bed and found this nice pair laying side by side next to the bed. The bases only measured at 3" and the overall length of the mains weren't great but the G-2's measure at 8.5" and the G-3's at 8", so overall a very decent young buck. Would like to see his sheds from this year to see how he has progressed. Maybe in a few more years he can make it on my wall? :-D I wonder if you can call that "deer profiling"?

Hi Guys
I am an advid shed hunter as well. I usually find between 50 and 100 per season from all the antlered species. I haven,t looked yet but I usually start in mid April then I can add elk to the mix. The picture below was from 2007 19 lbs and the one below that was from 2003 I was able to take a month of holidays and head out most days for moose. I think I found over 80 that year with the total weight being over 700lbs. I will post my 2010 pictures in June. Good luck everyone

Very nice moose collection! Where do ya find all the moose sheds? I know where lots of moose winter but its friggin thick and they move around a fair bit, not really into puttin that many miles on unless its to actually hunt. Deer are different but some insight on moose would be cool!!

Too early here in the south Cariboo. I had a nice buck on the Ranch this am. Still had horns and will for sometime given it is still JAnuary.

Mark is the King of Mule Deer sheds for sure. Saw some at the Sheep AGM last year that were picked up around the Kelowna area. I find about 20 per year and no pairs yet.

Went for a hike last weekend with the whole family, and my 5 year old daughter found both sides to a nice 4 point white tail. They were both under the same tree, and they are really fresh. She also found an arrow stuck in the ground. We pulled it out, and was amazed at its length. I shoot 20" bolts with my crossbow, but this arrow has to be 40" plus! I'll try to get a pic up later.

In past dry winters like this one I found the muley bucks hung on to their headgear well into late Feb and even had numerous bucks still packin in March. I expect this year should be a tuff shed season with bucks scattered across much of their range. The added bonus is the wolves will be having a harder time seeing success.

My son spotted a large bull moose not far from the house a few days ago that was still packing. I showed my son an 8 point shed and asked if he was bigger than that and he replied that the antlers were much larger. Might gone for walk today and see if I can pick up the trail.
Found a fresh 3 point muley right on the road a week ago. Alot of bucks are being spotted still packing. I too attribute that to the mild winter.

I took some grainy pics of a 4 point still packin just the other night. He is bached up with a good 10 other bucks and some of them do indeed have several inches of velvet. These bucks are hanging out in the field in front of my house. Seeing an inch or 2 of velvet this time of year isn't unusual, especially given we've had pretty much no winter and things are greening up rapidly. If you've ever paid attention in winters past, you wouldn't be surprised.

I'm curious if any one knows how long after a deer drops his antlers when is the earliest he can start to grow new bone i would think at least a couple of months ?

Hmm, I wonder how long it takes elk eh? They are the longest to hold on to them, most dropping in April and some as late as May, and yet most are fully grown by Early August. Do you really think it takes long for the new bone to start to grow?
When it comes to muleys, in harder winters, the first green of the spring goes directly into body repair. The winter can certainly take it's toll on a buck's body. In a normal winter that new grass normally doesn't start to grow until Early to Mid-April. This year, I was seeing new green in Late Feb. In easy winters, a buck doesn't need to repair his body. There was lush growth last summer and he got really fat. The rut was very quiet with not a lot of chasing and fighting, so he maintained that fat. Winter came and went rather quickly with much of the south-slopes being bare in early Jan. He has been living a charmed life and now all that lush green he's been eating for the last 3 weeks goes directly to antler growth. Given the conditions, we should see some incredible antler growth this summer with a lot more bucks reaching their genetic potential.

Roosevelt elk can grow up to 4" (over all) of bone per day.

I saw this monster today just outside of the Loops. Looked like his 2 buddies had just dropped. So there are some new sheds on the ground if you Kamloops shed addicts are eager. ;)

I've picked up fresh muley sheds as early as Dec 26th and I've seen them packin' as late as the first week of April. Most normal years the mass dropping happens the last week of Jan. Not in a year like this one though. Was finding numerous winter rubs as early as the first week of Jan. Winter rubs are an indication that they want the antlers off. IMO they must get itchy for the buck. I watched numerous sparing matches this Jan where they were working at popping them off too. I saw my first shed out buck of the year the second week of Jan. And as of today, I'm still seeing some packin'. I suspect the new velvet will indeed push off the late ones if they don't start pounding bush soon to knock them off.

I have never herd of a deer shedding as early as dec26 that is very intresting. the reason i asked about the time period was i thought after the antler was shed the deer was left with a wound so to speak that bleeds and needs to heal before a new antler can start but if you have seen a deer shed in dec then i guess it is totally possible to see new growth this early. your giving me a good schooling on mulies

Muley bucks heal rather quickly. Even though this pic of The Coke Can Buck is poor, you can see the holes in his head and he was bleeding pretty good.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v145/BCBOY/IMG_1546.jpg
That was the morning of the 22 of Jan when I took that pic. Saw him later that afternoon and he was already scabbed over. Saw him a week later and he was starting to form the nubs. I know it was the same buck because he was bached up with another buck that I was watching and waiting to drop.
Stress is a big factor that causes bucks to drop. I've heard people say that the big boys are the ones that drop early and the little ones hold on to them late, but here is a small forky that I found fresh Dec 26, 2008. The 08/09 winter was pretty damn harsh on the deer around here and they were feeling it as early as Christmas. That is why this forky dropped early.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v145/BCBOY/Dec26033a.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v145/BCBOY/Dec26034a.jpg

I shot a buck on Dec 10th, 2006 and his peddicles were already starting to decalcify. I had wounded him 3 1/2 weeks early by taking out the opposite shoulder. I have no doubt he would have shed very early due to the stress if I hadn't of killed him on Dec 10th.

Well I got out on Saturday morning to my friends massive private property and this evening for about 3 hours. Came up 2 sheds as old as the hills and one 4 point freshy from within the last week. On Sat there was some snow on the ground still from the previous day and that enabled us to find where the bachelor group had bedded for the night. Out of the 12 beds about 10 of them had blood next to them. Scoured the hillside where they hang out both days but still no finds of the real recent ones. Saw about 27 or 31 deer tonight (might have counted 4 twice) and I glassed them but none were packing any bone. There has got to be at least 10 fresh pairs laying out there somewhere waiting to be found.

I asked my son about the velvet bucks he saw (he's 11) the other day and he seemed real confident in what he saw. He said he was using his binos when the deer were within 100 yards and that is when he saw the velvet. So I will give him the benefit of the doubt for what he saw.

Would be nice to see some bucks this fall at full genetic potential.

so this is the first year i've found sets of sheds either right beside each other or right on top of each other. how often do you guys find the matching set of a buck that have both sides right close together? this year i've found 4 sets like that, before this year i've only ever found both sides to a buck twice, and they were a fair distance away from each other.

Found a decent set from a 5 point whitetail last year....they were right beside his bed about 2 feet from each other. The bed was on little ridge that I have know for years to be a common bedding spot for deer. I thought I would check it out and was pleasantly surprised to find a matching set. Would like to go back this year to see if there are any more gifts laying about.

You should ask Shedhunter if he would post a pic of the matching muley sheds he found last year side by side....they are some nice ones.

Anyone willing to sell any of their sheds? I recently got into taxidermy and shed antlers would make a nice addition to a habitat base. Also thinking of using some to make a pedestal base with. They do not have to be fresh or matched sets or anything. Please send pics and price including shipping to Quesnel V2J 6X1 to mascqbc@telus.net

Thanks

Well 2nd day shed hunting in some prime mule deer country.Went with my bro in law, my son and myself,we went for what was supposed to be a little hike. ended up on big hike, especially for the little guy, I cant believe my son hiked all the way up right on the heels of his uncle. once we reached near the top of the ridge we had a fire and cooked some (lots) of smokies (my son would eat us out of house and home if given the chance)any ways found four sheds 1 fresh, 1 last years, 2 that were so old when they were dropped they basically blew apart.

in this pics wayyyy... down on the left is a patch of snow that is where we started, turns out we were about twenty minutes from dropping over the ridge to the other side
