Well we've been prawning a few times over the holiday's with some not so stellar results but still a blast to get out on the water. Today we decided to venture a little farther with the closures and all. We got into the prawns and limited out no problem.

As we just finished setting gear a pod of porpoises came to say hello. I didn't get very good pictures put they were swimming right under the boat and coming up to check us out. Lasted about 15 minutes. Cool stuff for sure.

I bought this Mr. Buddy Heater last year and it works great to take the edge off after hauling gear. Warms up your gloves too:-D.

Looks like you had a good time on the water, nothing like a good feed of prawns.

Make sure you check out DFO's site for closures. They implemented some new ones starting Jan.1st in quite a few area's. Good luck and have fun.

looks like fun.

It really is quite relaxed and fun. It is a good way to beat cabin fever. Notice no snow in the background of the first photo:mrgreen:.

I've seen Porpoises 4 times on the East side of the Island. They are cool mammals for sure. You see them lots on the West coast but it's really neat to see them on the other side.

Ohhh come on man you gotta love it:lol:. No snow and freezing temps. Get out when ever you want. The rain is a brain thing. I've lived here my whole life and when I go away I actually miss the rain:-?.

Went out yesterday, what a great day on the water. Launched out of Cow Bay and cruised the inlet, water was flat calm and was warm out. Unfortunately the prawns and crabs did not co operate, still nice being out there though when everyone else across the country is bundled up. Water was murky which might have been part of the issue.

I grew up in Burns Lake and love the snow at least you can go out in it and stay dry. I am disapointed in the weather right now it is +7 and will be all week, I would rather be in snowshoes than gumboots:mrgreen:, and after 12 years in the lowermainland I dont miss the rain. Miss the fishin in Kitimat, but the okanagan has great flyfishing, hunting and you cant beat the eye candy on the beaches in the summer.

As I sit here today looking out at the wind and rain all I can say is what a great day we had on the water yesterday. Good weather, good company, and good prawning:-D.

Looks like you were out in nanaimo? I have never fished prawns before and was told to set traps in about 315-350 feet of water of the five fingers island. Any advice for a novice such as how long to soak traps for? I bought the prawn bait off of Pacific net and twine and have some ace of baits sent as well. No puller so I am only going to set one trap on the line just to see how heavy a pull it is before trying two.

Fox, not so much heavy, but you better have some endurance for 350 feet. That is what kills you.

Back to Fox- if you can leave the traps overnight that's best IMO. For a day outing 3 hrs plus if you can.

The depth you were told is about right in most cases. It varies from spot to spot. Is is trial and error and that is the fun of it. You are really fishing not catching. We leave the first soak for about 1.5 hours and see where we are hitting them. If we are on them we drop them on top of them right away and wait another 45 min - 1 hr. and pull them again. Use the Carlise tuna cat food mixed with pellets topped with prawn sauce (the liquid stuff of any manufacturer). PNT is a good source for any of your fishing supplies and they do offer legit and good information:-D.

You can pull 2 traps up from 350 no problem. Doing four sets of them in a row you will want a buddy along (or two).
