I'd guess bigger ..a lot bigger....but then I've seen the higher quality longer version.

You should have walked up and measured those prints as he was laying them down:wink:.

I was under the impression that anything with a hump like that is a grizzly. (I'm not saying your wrong) What do you look at to i.d that as a Black bear?

high and to the right

This Griz is over 7 feet - pushing 8 or a little better would be my guess.

This griz is in the low 8 foot area would be my guess.

Given a griz's head size and a good griz skull would be 16" long I'd say its close to 9'.

if your talking nose to base of tail, i'd say about 7ft. If your taking the bear as a squared measurement, i'd say he's pushin 8ft. Not a monster, but if I had a tag I wouldn't hesitate! Nice grizz.

It is big enough that I would not hesitate to shoot. As to actual size its pure guess work until its down.

you can't tell how big that bear is b/c there is nothing to compare it too. You can all guess what you like, but unless you know the size of the downed log, or something like that in the background you can't tell.

Just out of curiosity... I would like to learn how to eye-ball measure bears a little better, but this video has no referances. Is there any tricks that people use to eye-ball bears?

I am thinking maybe the size of the broad leaves? or kind of foiliage that only grows to a certain size? or is it purley an educated guess because of the number of bears that you have seen?

It is a coastal grizzly probably 8' nose to tail huge belly on it but it also has huge ears so I'm thinking max 22" - 23" skull if your lucky.

Nice bear though and I would also shoot it if I had another tag.

Honestly, the truly best way is too shoot a few.... you go wow a 7'er, drop him, pull out the tape to find out he's only 5' :icon_frow.
It takes lots of bear watching to get any good at it.
Most mistake people make is not spending enough time observing the bear before shooting it!
having shot a 7' brown phase in the past, thats all I do now is observe them! :)

That bears over 8 ft!.would put money on it.....only way I can add my 2 cents is having seen dozens of em and being in on numerous kills........as far as guessing inches in skull measurments before its boiled off , its impossible....all bear heads are different , some big meat heads , some old old bears seem to loose the meat and just be all skull......same old shit ,more experience seeing them is going to get you better judging skills......as well , I have heard MANY guys tell me how much a bear weighed while looking at them....I havent a clue how to guess the weight of ANY bear because I have NEVER weighed one..I would imagine you would have to have weighed many bears to accuratly guess the weight of a live one....how else would you know??...so I have NO experience to guess a bears weight.....I wouldnt hesitate in smokin that video grizzly for myself or my hunter:-D.

Long neck and big features all around, this is a mature male and I would not hesitate to shoot. as long as it wasn't on that kill!!

I'm not sure how big but I always think that if his belly isn't dragging then perhaps its not fully grown. As this guy seems to have pretty long legs he may not go beyond 6'? But I bow to those with more grizz experience...

Does his head appear small for his body size? Do his ears appear small and wide apart? Do his legs appear short like his belly is almost dragging the ground? (indications of a big mature bear)

Probably a little over 8 ft.

I'd go with 7.5 - 8'. nice big grizzly but certainly not HUGE. That'd be a shooter in my book.
It's tough to tell accurately from video footage of an area where I've never been. landmarks and size references from surroundings are helpfull.
experience and being in on numerous bear kills have proven invaluable for judging bears. My first couple bears turned out to measure a good foot in length less than I thought before I shot.

You can get reasonably good at judging the size of bears if you’ve seen quite a few, and are observant. It also helps if you’ve had the opportunity to inspect them up close, as in dead. Bears can be quite prone to ground shrinkage, lol.

6616 makes some good points. Smaller, immature bears tend to look gangly – long legs and neck, long ears not too widely spaced. Big old boars tend to, like their human counterparts, have their bellies hanging closer to the ground as they age. Unlike us though, their ears don’t keep growing out of proportion to their heads. Their ears can look shorter, rounder, and more widely spaced.

Here’s a couple of examples from some of my earlier bears;
