:cry:Well, I finally had to take my 14 1/2 year-old German Short-haired pointer cross for her final trip to the vet. It was way harder than I thought. All my tough talk was just BS.

She was a faithful dog and earned her keep by chasing off several bears from the homestead over the years.

R.I.P. Patches! We'll miss you.

It's very tough for sure, and I feel for you all. Thankfully the sorrow does pass, eventually. Very strange that things have to be that way.....

Sorry to hear about your loss. no matter how tough you think you are, it's always difficult to say good-bye to a longtime friend like that. Remember all the good times you had with her.
I suggest you make a Christmas tree ornament with her picture on it, and put it on the tree. You'll bring back the good memories year after year.
I lost 2 dogs this year and that's what I'll be doing.

Sorry to hear about your loss, it is always a rotten day when the time comes.

Sounds like your dog lived a pretty good life with a family that cared for her.

thats where you are wrong indeed, just like the bumper sticker, "the more people i meet the more i like my dog".
my yellow lab was my best bud in the world, he would have done anything for me and i for him, there are very few people in this world that i can trust like i trusted him.
and i know that alot of people here feel the same way.

I know what you went through. I put my 12yr old Lab down this fall. i couldn't look at a picture of her and the outtings with out messing up. I made a huge picture frame of good times and hung her collar and whistle on it. You should do that, it will bring a smile to your face when you remember those trips,, birds, burrs and drinking your water out of you hand.. ahhhhhhhh good times .

Thanks for all your kind wishes guys. I used to say the same thing (i.e. "It's just a dog") until I had to be the one to pull the plug!

It is like losing a family member - just not quite as severe (I lost my Mom 2 Christmases ago & it is in another league of pain & loss, but that doesn't make this any easier....).

As suggested, I made a Xmas ornament with my daughter so "Patchy" is with us in spirit!

Good times in the field with a faithful dog - hard to beat memories like those!

So sorry to hear of your friend's passing.
Sorrow is caused by loss of something joyful.
I think Patches must have received as much joy from you as you gave in return.

There never is a good time or an easier time when we lose a long time buddy or hunting partner. Take comfort in knowing what he meant to you and yours.
They really do become part of the family.

You'll never forget him.

Best wishes though for the season.

There is nothing true in the "it's just a dog" statement. They are just as much a member of your family as any other member. Sorry about the loss of your friend and companion.

Coming up to the first anniversary of my pals' death in January, then a week later my mom passed away, so I know how you must be feeling. I've never been ashamed of the tears I shed over my dog. As said by others in this thread, he was a part of the family. Sure am glad to see the tail end of 2009.
Please accept my sincere condolences.

I am very sorry for your loss deer nut. I know how tough it is. We lost my wife's 13.5yo lab three months ago and she still gets tears in her eyes every day. My 15.5yo lab likely isn't too far behind, so we are cherishing every good moment we get with him.
