Hi everyone,
Took my lab out for our last day of the grouse & deer season on Saturday. We spent the day hiking some new roads and stumbled across a really great grouse spot, seeing four birds in the span of a half hour. Unfortunately, they were quick to fly and it was pretty hilly terrain. Came home with one ( a ruffie), and it'll be dinner tonight.
Just wanted to give a big thanks to everyone on the site for all the help they've given me this year. I'm 27 and new to B.C., and though I had hunted in New Brunswick with my dad from the age of 5 'til I hit university, I hadn't been out in years.
Thanks to HBC, in the span of about two weeks I went from "no plans to hunt", to buying a shotgun, doing some basic retriever training, and hitting the woods. That's all due to advice I found on here, from where to buy a used gun in Vancouver to the best spots to hunt. Special thanks to Plincker for info on hunting spots, and Jimbo for the bag of bird wings.
Bought my first deer tag this year, and though I didn't so much as see a buck, it was great to have along -- just in case. Also had the girlfriend buy me a Cutco drop-point knife for a birthday present, and my old man shipped out of my old hunting clothes that I hadn't seen in almost 10 years (still fit!). Nothing like a pair of camo suspenders. Best of all, I got to spend a full day every week beating the bush with my dog (he's about 18 months now), and I feel he's learned a lot while doing it.
I kept everything pretty budget -- homemade dog vest, cheap single-shot 20 gauge -- but plan on expanding next year. Also proud to have been able to get into a lot of hunting spots with a little 2WD car. I was most definitely the only guy driving a Prius on the backroads.
I'll be out this winter, likely tracking bunnies so I have an excuse to be out in the woods with a gun on my back. Thanks again for all your help, HBC members, and have a great Christmas.
