View Full Version : My Kamloops Ram

Beaver Trap
12-11-2009, 12:17 AM
So this summer, i got the news that i was the winner of the november kamloops lake sheep draw. I was like a 15 Year old boy with a fresh girlfriend PUMPED. I spent every night dreaming of a smoker ram. The first oppertunity i had, i was gone scouting. The draw was nov 1 to 20 and i wasn't going to work at all. Then came the day i had been waiting for and we were gone. It was like Saskatchewan but with rams. Its was a dream come true. By 9am we were on to a good one and decided to get a better look. Not being the best and field judging animals i called it around a 155 ram. Not ready to settle yet, i passed it up and went looking for the smoker i had been day dreaming about. We hunted for another 6 days. Each day seeing trophy rams in the 160 to 170 class and again I let them go. On november 11 we were gone once again, Myself, Jay and Kevin in my single cab F150 all the way to Kamloops. (it wouldn't be a hunt if you didn't put three guys in the front of a smaller truck). We spotted a bruiser from across the lake and made a go for him. 2Hr later we we found ourselves half way up the mountain looking at many sheep, but unable to find the bruiser. We decided to go back to where we were glassing from and see if we could spot him again. At 1pm we saw him, not the one from earlier, but a bigger one. This was the ram I had been holding out for and he wasn't going anywhere. We went for it and 1hr later i had him at 800yds. With lots of cover between us and him we closed it to 280yds. Benched in on the packs i held on him for 15min waiting for a clear brodside shot. It came and i drilled him right in the lungs and he went down. I finally got the one i'd been waiting for.
Not bad for a California eh!

That is an amazing RAM, someone in the top ten is going to get knocked out I'll bet. I have hiked those hills and photographed some beauties but that is one of the nicesy rams I have seen on Kamloops Lake. Good on ya!!

I have a california that scores 172, and your ram looks a little bigger. Even though it has a tight curl, I would say it scores 178.

sarnold
12-11-2009, 09:43 PM
congrats brett!!
all your hard work and time payed off!!! can't what to see the mount!
if i can't remember what the bases were i think 14 3/4 and it carried that around to the 3/4 curl mark, this made the bc book #3 boone and crockett #8 if i'm remembering correctly (green scored of course)
from what beaver trap told me you will also be seeing this hunt on wild tv in the future

12-11-2009, 11:37 PM
i have had it rough scored by a friend at 175 2/8 but nothing solid. Ranking is a guess at best. Boone and crockette doesn't have california as a seperate species so it will not rank well against rocky mountains. so until i get an official score i will not speculate.

Regardless of score that is a great ram. But FYI at 175 the ram would score in the #14 position in the last book. But I know of at least 4-5 rams that have scored over 180 shot in the last couple of years so your ram might be bumped out of the top 20 if everyone enters their rams.

Once again, that will all mean little when you see your ram on the wall. Your ram has awesome eye appeal. Once again great ram and great job on the hunt.

The BC Premiers permit sells for close to 100,000 grand each year down in the states. I dont think any of the buyers have ever hunted the Kamloops Lake band. They usually shoot a Rocky out of the Koots. A BC resident that won the Premiers permit last year took a low 180's out of there.
