Just wondering if anyone hunts with a .260, and what animals they have taken with it. I have room in the case for another rifle so I was looking at the Remington 700 dm mountain rifle anyone have or use this gun? Rob

Firebird is your man, he's taken a few deer and at least one wolf with it.

Marc.

I hunted with a 6.5x55 this past fall which is basically the same thing. I stopped a good sized black bear in huckleberry patch with one shot into the shoulder. I also took a nice whitetail with it. I have also had a Model Seven in .260 but I didn't get a chance to hunt with it before it moved on to a new home. The model seven didn't fit me well. I never felt undergunned with my 6.5's and I wouldn't hesitate to take bigger game like moose or elk with it. My Remington mountain rifle is a 7mm-08 and its a good gun as well. I took a couple bears and mulies with it. I think the .260 is a great cartridge and the Remington Mountain rifle suits it well.

When you say it didnt fit you well how come? is it not the same as your 7mm-08? And how far away was the bear? thanks Rob.

I thought about a .338 but figure I dont really need it. I work this weekend and school next weekend. A .260 would be a great deer calibre, I just wondered if people have taken larger game with it. Thanks for the replys guys! Rob.

The Model Seven stock didn't fit me it was too short or something. I just didn't like the shoulder to gun fit I always had to fidget. The mountain rifle was snap it to the shoulder and the sight picture was there no fidgeting. Same scope, same mounts, I can't really explain it I just didn't like the model Seven. The bear was about 150 yards away uphill. I have taken quite a few bears with rifles in 6.5x55, 7mm-08, 280, and never had a problem.

I've owned three rifles chambered in 260 Remington.

first was a m700 LSS mtn rifle restocked with a WildCat Composites fiberglass stock.

I bought another LSS mtn rifle m700

and those are now gone, today I shoot a custom barreled m700
http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/6_5_Panther_002.jpg

It's a wonderful, mild mannered cartridge. 45-50 grains of powder, low recoil, low muzzle blast, very accurate, and deadly on game. So far I have shot five deer, a wolf, and a couple coyotes with my rifles since 2003.

all rifles were 1" or better accurate with handloads, and my current custom 260 shoots even better

in my opinion, if you shoot factory ammo, go with the 7mm-08 Rem. if you shoot handloads, go with the 260 Rem. in either cartridge, the first rifle I'd opt for is the Remington Model 700 LSS Mtn Rifle. they are plain awesome.

I wouldnt hesitate to take elk or moose with my rifle, when loaded with 130 or 140 gr. Barnes X bullets.

The heavier 6.5 bullets penetrate very well. I have taken moose with a sporterized Swedish Mauser in 6.5x55 and it did the job very well. I recently bought a full size BDL in the 260 and hope to test it out this fall. The longer 24" barrel in the 700BDL as apposed to the M7 will get the full potential out of this cartridge.

Nice groups Firebird! I like the custom barrelled 700., Well I checked out some prices btw S.I.R/Wholesale/Russells and it looks like Russells will be the best price,(also picking up a couple scopes)Thanks for the help guys. Rob.

I use a .260 in a Rem SS DM M700. Easy handling, and not too fussy for hand loading. Have taken black bear and mule deer with it. I'm glad I have the 24" barrel as I have never been able to reach max loads without serious pressure signs and in backing off the load I have only attained modest MVs (which is all relative anyway!). A 22" barrel would only mean lower MVs. Given the short action, the longer barrel is not an issue for me. I have settled on a 125 grn Nosler ptn at about 2800 fps and want to give the 130 grn TSX a try. The Nos Ptn with 48.5 grn H4831 and a Rem 9 1/2 primer shoots MOA.8-) One day, I'll build a beauty to rival Firebird's collection!

ordered the rifle and scopes today from Wholesale sports(Russells was back ordered on the rifle). Are you able to adjust the triggers on the 700? or does it have to go to the shop. Rob

factory m700 triggers can be adjusted without going for a trip to the gunsmith.

that being said, giving a gunsmith some business on a $40 trigger job isnt a bad thing, and they usually do a very good job.

here's a how-to article for the do it yourself adjustment on a m700 trigger

you're gonna love your 260 :D
