Heeeere weeeee goooooo !!!!

OK....I'm at it ! It all starts now.

My snares / traps have been hanging since last April untouched. The sled is in the truck and tuned up , now all I need is bait!

Bait to date : few deer carcass's , one bucket of old rotton fish guts/tails rotting since last july outside , one beaver , couple deer skulls and apperantly a pile of freezer burnt game meat....as well , a farmer phoned me last week to ask where I wanted an old dead cow dropped...she is sleeping / patiently waiting for the Ryan River pack to come around ( less 5 of their members from last winter:twisted:).

So....one thing that may assist is some news from region 2 hunters that hunted the Pemberton Valley ( preferrably North Creek/Hurley/Meager area ) who may have come across some wolf sign ...please let me know!...maybe pm me to save on the multiple pages that are to be stacking on here if you have some solid info :-D!!!

Many pics to follow , hard earned knowledge to share and take in:wink:...

Last fall saw 9 wolves killed....yr before 7 , yr before 3. Last fall was a great year for gaining even more knowledge and I am now setting the bar for TWENTY WOLVES down this season by spring 2010.
HBC member has offered up permission to trap his two lines wich brings my total to 5 different lines to trap wolves on this fall....this will help BIGTIME !!:mrgreen:
Our local club pitched in some $ as well to go towards the cause:mrgreen:...not a lot but it feels great to have some kind of donations !!...the costs add up LOTS by the end of the season and wolves dont make you $.:(
Maybe if I get a huge one or two I could raffle em off to create trapping funds??

I have a few places in mind to get the gear into early...maybe hang some small baits for scent and see if we can get some quick kills!!!
Wish me luck! ( I am working like crazy as well so pics and reports will be slow for the start)

There's a bunch near Squampton behind Furry Ck.
Wish you could get those ones.

Good idea on the raffle. Get some nice pelts, and maybe a taxi would give you a cut rate on tanning....
Pay the taxi, donate a little to HBC, and the rest for expenses.
I'm sure there's lots here that would buy a ticket/bid in an auction for a primo wolf pelt that helps the cause as well!

Good luck ProGuide!

I heard that wolves are very suspicious of cold red meat, they won't eat it if it isn't warm. BUT I was told that they will take cold chicken, for some reason they arn't suspicous of cold chicken.

Not sure if its true but I've heard guys using that trick.

Yeah but I bet he was warm when they started eating him, what i ment was for a wolf to arbitrarily come across a cold piece of red meat that it didn't kill itself is suppose to make them suspicious.

Well your right on one point , they ARE very cautious....BUT...they LOVE dead frozen beef. 2 yrs ago a local farmer shot two old cows and dumped them out in the 'back 40' in Nov....they were covered in 5 ft of snow and I started trapping off them by Feb. the wolves had a huge tunnel dug down into the carcass's...I nailed 2 wolves off it.
As well, wolves who are familiar with beef and calving season regularly eat off the farmers bone piles ( discarded carcass's). Last winter I drug a BIG dead old cow into a trap zone and a month later nailed 2 more off the frozen beef.
Look back into the wolf trapping thread you will also see a photo of a dead deer frozen under a water filled ditch...the photo shows the claw marks from the wolves digging ( or scratching) down into the ice to slowly eat at the frozen meat:wink:

My old trapping friend that I help trap said that he had taken 5 wolves with his leg hold traps as for the snares on this farmers land a few years ago in black creek where I live.

What the farmer did was dump his dead cow parts down the back end of his farm land.

It brought the wolves in to eat the cow parts ,then after they had cleaned up the cow parts ,they then started to kill the cows.

Sense then the farmer digs a hole and Barrie's the cow parts no more problems.

I doubt you'll go this far to trap wolves but, I was hunting the Elaho Valley a bit earlier this year and there is a ton of wolf sign in there. lots of coyote sign too. Evey single deer trail I followed, at some point during the trail large K9 tracks intercepted the trail. it was nuts! that the main reason I stopped hunting there.

I guess that makes sense in areas full of cattle, the area that the chicken was effective had no cows. Its winter range no farms and NO cattle or grazing allowed.

Hope you guys nail a bunch of wolves, BC has too many predator species.

Well , the gal and I went out to check on a cow that was dropped for me over a week ago and see whats been goin on.

http://i443.photobucket.com/albums/qq155/proguide66/018.jpg

the ground/snow is frozen very hard and hasnt snowed in a couple weeks. Seeing tracks is impossible..fresh ones anyway.
While searching for good trails I went to set a snare I had left attached to a cedar tree last yr and found someone tampered with it and tried to pull it off by wrapping a big stick around it and yarding on it..you can see the stress marks on the branch.
This area is entered through private propety only...some people DO cross country ski through here the odd time and sled in , as well a small handfull of deer hunters...this PISSED ME OFF.....:evil:...i am going to place signs at the area now...was thinking ' Legal trapping in area , if you are reading this , you have already been photographed , tampering with legally placed gear is illegal'...

http://i443.photobucket.com/albums/qq155/proguide66/023.jpg

http://i443.photobucket.com/albums/qq155/proguide66/024.jpg

Anyway...carried on and set a few snares on previously 'found' routes that as well had sign of being used to go to the kill site. I only set a 'handfull' today due to snow being in the forcast...have a feeling its going to finally ' dump' and I have limited time at the moment for trapping due to work...not much time this week to change up burried snares...i will pick up speed though during the next few weeks....am confidet to have a couple kills off these this week !!!

proguide66
12-17-2009, 09:10 AM
Dont know about the other fellas but the wolves down here are pretty lame as far as fur goes..dont know why.Out of the total I have caught the last few yrs only one or two was worth skinning...up north the wolves fetch outfitters around $1000 each by the end of it...$500 from the northern guides association for each kill , then they sell them to US hunters for $500 ....I think they 'might' get 100 to 150 a hide at the fur sales( not solid sure) , but the work involved to prep them for the market is hardly worth the sale price.....to me the savings on the deer/moose herd is very worth it though!!:-D

tomcat
12-17-2009, 06:26 PM
On the last NAFA May sale wolves averaged $95 with the top being$391. For a well coloured wolf skinned fro taxidermy $150 TO $175 would be about right. Not much money for all the work involved

My trapper friend has trapped 70 beaver so far this year he is getting $100.00 a beaver.

He also gets the money from the pelts he sells ,he does not know how much an average pelt will be ,he just sent in all the pelts a few weeks ago ,I will let you know how much he gets on an average pelt when he gets his money from the buyers.

Some hides are black ,some are prim white will see what the difference is in money from being black and white ????.

KodiakHntr
12-18-2009, 09:59 AM
up north the wolves fetch outfitters around $1000 each by the end of it...$500 from the northern guides association for each kill , then they sell them to US hunters for $500 ....

Last I heard from one of the guides involved up here in the wolf program (two weeks ago) is that they are paying $250 a wolf. They then have them tanned, and sell them down at the SHOT show and sportsmans shows for whatever they can get....(Occasionally fairly high $$$, depending on the hide and whats been done with it.)

dave_83golf
12-18-2009, 10:05 AM
$250 is fairly accurate. My hunting partners and I took a Wolf in the Smithers region however, and were hoping that we would get something for her. She was the Alpha Female in a pack of 10-12.... Wild Story. This wolf was not wanted by the Taxi because she did not have her winter coat. Obviously this time of year its a bit different as were heading into the dead of winter. But just as a heads up for years to come, sometimes you think you added a few bucks to your pocket, but it turns out, it isnt worth anything.

Please, please , please don't say this is the end of the beavers partying down thread....:eek::eek:

Just cause they are a bunch of "party animals" does not mean they have to be taken to the bush and never brought back !!!! Did you try rehab on them first, before taking this drastic sttep????

proguide66
12-18-2009, 05:13 PM
The wolves caught where I guide get skinned out for potential full mount , salted and dried. The hunters that come up buy them up after their hunts are over , unless they shot one themselves.

I know first hand the outfitters get $500 pr kill....there must be a 2nd organisation that chips in the other 250.....my guide partner/best freind gets the 500.....he's been cashing in for years:wink:

SO.....spent the afternoon hanging beaver ' cookies' and setting snares in GRREAT locations....again , i dont have big baits ( thought I weas promised some:neutral:)..so I have hung my beaver chunks out of reach of predators and the raptors....the places I did this are MAJOR wolf travel routes...cant say when they will come through , but THEY WILL !!!
I had some left over 'light' stainless welding rod in my shop ( I use them to make my own halibutt spreader bars , cost 60 cents each)....I used some to hang my snares on big trees...

Once again I only have small baits. I have hung them to make them last as long as possible and only set where I KNOW the wolves regularly travel...the scent should hold them up a bit and get them niffin around and hopefully snared up!!

proguide66
12-18-2009, 05:40 PM
Another thing I have noticed the last few yrs here is that if there is a cedar tree with a veil of branches glued into the snow , the wolves will ALWAYS slip between the branches and trunks when coming into some scent....even if it is obviously easier to walk in the open , they ALWAYS dip through the veils....this winter I am starting off with scents near bigger timber and less hardwood patches...the veils also protect the set longer from a big dump of snow as opposed to open hardwood patch wich just fills up creating less effective time for the snares until I have to come re-set all the gear wich is a royal pain in the pooper!!....its cool to realise you are learning while looking back at all the dumbass things I was doing in the beginning...no expert yet , but gettin better at it!!

here's some sets from today....have 68 snares out now and 5 different beaver chunks hung..

YES THEY DO STAY CLOSED, WITH THE AID OF A FILED CAM LOCK.!!

A SNARE WORKS BY CUTTING OFF THE BLOOD FLOW TO THE BRAIN!!

NOT BY STRANGULATION !!

IF THE SNARES ARE SET CORRECTLY ITS VERY QUICK AN D HUMANE!!

yup , boil the shit outta them.......baking soda/ pine ect...not sure how you can see 'shine' in those pics??....wish I could make them white!!...they seem to get the job done though...cats seem to jump right in , even though I dont target them..I'll bet I could snare a dozen bobcats a week here if I tried !!..I set high to try and avoid them , but they seem to keep on walking through!...check out the first wolf trapping thread , you will see the numerous kills.

Went to check the few snares I have out today....all were burried in the last major dump. I had to dig down to find them and came up with a chewed off snare , my first one.....lucky wolf!
Also found a big hole at the base of a rock with deer partd scatered around and fresh couger prints all over and real fresh.
Of course the camera batteries had to quit so no pics. One good thing is all the deep powdery snow , makes for some unreal wolf trails!!!...they all step in the same foot print while traveling...walked along a great one and set snares every 25 yards for 300 yrds...should be interesting.....this week going to try and get out a tonne of snares , conditions are great now!

We went in , it was hell. What normally would be a 20 minute sled ride was 3 hrs....stuck 4 times , once upside down in a creek bed:evil::evil:...was soaked through before I even started setting.
Sure enough its a frikkin wolf party going on in there...right at the intersection where I nailed the huge one last yr there is a string of majorly used scent posts , a trough of tracks , trails branching of in every direction....they also dug up the old deer legs from last winter.
We set ft traps at 3 scent posts and I set around 40 snares all together...I also stomped a deer head/ beaver parts and rotton old halibutt bait into the snow all over for them to keep busy digging up..a whole beaver was also hung from a bowed over willow and hangs 6 ft off the ground...would be funny to know what they were thinking when they find the herring and octopus!:)...all this gear is spread out over 200 yrds...took a few pics of sets but didnt get into the camera much due to my fingers freezing off and sticking to everything I touched....sokaed and damned cold.
Hopefully we catch an important member of the pack and they keep mingleing around and get more snarled up....I will check this spot in a week...the line owner will check the ft traps every 3 days.

In Reg 8 there is currently no hunting or trapping season. Any wolves incidentally caught in a legal trap are forfeited to the crown.

I was sitting on a moose carcass today for a few hours. Lots of coyote tracks and some wolf tracks. As I was clearing a few shooting lanes to slip arrows through, I could see the exact type of trail sign that Proguide has in his pics. I probably could have set some successful snares just from watching last years and this thread!

That moose was almost cleaned up, but I may go back and put a trail cam on it. I don't know if the area is covered by an active trapline.

I'v never had the opportunity to go trapping. Its always interested me but like I said never had the chance. How much time does trapping take to do? do they hides sell for much? Is the gear such as snares and accessory's expensive? Hope this isnt took many questions for you trappers.

snareman1234
01-02-2010, 09:30 PM
The snares are junk
The locks are reusable aswell as the swivels

when the lock tightens it bights on the cable and kinks it, and the wolf would do a few flips when he is first caught and screw up the cable too

Shooter jr. Trapping is a lot like hunting

It can be done very cheaply, and eventually almost free. (snares, a few leghold, and you walk everywhere)

however no one does it like that, and it ends up burning a hole in your pocket(fancy padded jaw leghold, commercial lures, new knives, 4x4 pickups, atvs, snowmobiles)

but video games, movie theatres and fancy dinners cost money too, atleast hunting/trapping is out in the bush.

Snares are cheap, you can make up 2 dozen snares for about 20 bucks tops. But snaring takes a lot of patience, for those first few hard catches before you get on it.

There are very few people who make much, or any profit off of trapping. There are tons of weekend warriors( like myself) who trap to cover the gas and just enjoy being out.

any benefit to taking a big alpha male, and using him as bait in a region where another pack dominates? just a thought, after reading some stuff about wolves eating wolves, dropping a dead alpha might just get the other pack running in circles confused... ????

If you take out the alfa the pack splits up and makes smaller packs. Which in turn makes more wolfs. The only way trapping wolfs makes a difference is to remove the hole pack.

Urine from any male wolf placed will make other wolves pee on top , they cant refuse it.....as well , take any male dog for a walk , he will pee on top of where wolves have urinated!...as far as the whole body goes , who knows. Last yr I tried burying a wolf from another pack in the neighboring packs area..then placed foot traps on top..after na couple weeks a few wolves came by and made a wide path around it..never touched it....check out last years wolf trapping thread...lots and lots of trial/error , taking suggestions and putting them to the test....she's all there!;-)

Well.....went out again today to start RE-setting my gear...what a major pain in coastal BC trapping world!
I as well brought out some new bait , Gilmore's left over BH sheep carcass.
Most of my snares that were placed over great fresh wolf trails were half burried. The wolf trails arent even usable anymore due to the dogs not able to fit under the branches anymore due to the large dump.
I re set a few but more placed bait and am waitting for the wolves to come back and make new trails before I set too much.
I hung the rib cage then stomped meat scraps and leg bones deep into the snow so the wolves would really have to search em out. I as well tromped around in my snow shoes to make trails in hopes of the wolves following them....time shall tell.....need more bait!

http://i443.photobucket.com/albums/qq155/proguide66/026-1.jpg
this is a snare set last week over a well used wolf trail....most of the others were half burried.

There WAS a great trail under this snare..as well our trail WAS here earlier...

I WHIPPED some of the sheep leg bones as hard as I could into the soft snow to burry it from birds view...only the wolves will know they are there!!

http://i443.photobucket.com/albums/qq155/proguide66/029.jpg

I as well dragged the carcass behind my sled en route to the trapping zone to maybe help spread the scent...

http://i443.photobucket.com/albums/qq155/proguide66/025.jpg

Back to 'work' tomarrow...off into another area on tues to do more baiting and re setting....eagerly awaiting my FIRST kill of the season!!...have some catching up to do! ( this shit is hard assed work to do in coastal snow clogged mountains!)

If you take out the alfa the pack splits up and makes smaller packs. Which in turn makes more wolfs. The only way trapping wolfs makes a difference is to remove the hole pack.

Very good points and why in SOME areas there is more wolfs now then there used to be.
To trap out the whole pack is very unlikely.

My brother was out Grouse hunting with his Chesapeke, outside of Vanderhoof this past fall, The dog took off into the bush and the Bro heard a yelp from his dog. Knowing this is not a good sound to hear, he starts walking towards where the sound came from. All of a sudden he's staring at a huge black wolf not 30 ft away and then his dog walks up beside it. He fired a round off over its head and it was gone!. He told me it scared the heck out of him, but never bothered his dog.
I think that his dog being a female is the reason mr Wolfy didn't kill her..?
He said the wolf was twice as big as his dog, and she weighs in at easy 85#.

I know of a guy who has a wolf/shepherd-husky cross. They pulled the pups out of a den in Bute inlet.

Regarding the female wolf, I have heard the tales of females enticing dogs in to the bush and the pack kills them. True or not I dont know but I am sure it has happened.
I don't see why a lone wolf wouldnt try to get a 'piece' from a lone dog if they were in season.
Lone animals do weird things.

http://i443.photobucket.com/albums/qq155/proguide66/003-4.jpg
Carried along and found nother yote...the wolf snare was against his shoulders wich doesnt do much but hold them.
http://i443.photobucket.com/albums/qq155/proguide66/005-4.jpg

Still NO WOLVES at this one spot. They came through over a month ago..maybe if I had some good bait they might hold up a bit or come back more often.
Packed up the sled and drove to spot #2. The wolves FINALLY came by for the first time. There were two bob cats hanging up and the wolves didnt really like the situation. I had hung a beaver and stomped some bever slices into the snow at an intersection of timber/rockwall and road a month ago.
One cat was the largest I have seen to date.

http://i443.photobucket.com/albums/qq155/proguide66/014-1.jpg

The wolves circled the area and as well layed down on the outskirts...these are common reactions to something they havent killed. Last yr they did the same numerous times while NOT going in to feed...I snared off their perimeter trails and nailed em...so...I did the same here and am hoping for some wolf kills soon.

At another spot I found a snare wich had wolf tracks going through and the snare drawn all the way out..no wolf or a sing of stuggle...dont known how they do it!

Here's another bobcat,
http://i443.photobucket.com/albums/qq155/proguide66/015-3.jpg

I have also found when wolves are at a kill site or a site of interest , they will circle and lay down.If there is any kind of a bump or 'hump' they will walk on top of it or lay on it...kinda like a pigmy goat in the back yard..will sit or walk on the highest point..even if its the size of a stump.
http://i443.photobucket.com/albums/qq155/proguide66/021-1.jpg
I snared off the logs they were walking on as well more perimter trails.I switched to a thinner snare wire...can barely see em in the right spots.
I then packed up nd went to a spot where I know wolves will travel on a well used trail. Anyone familiar with the Ryan river in Pemby , I snared off the 'Camel Back' trail near the base...caught a wolf and a couple yotes there last yr and re set on it today....the wolves will pick up speed here after the farmers cattle start calving and the dead are thrown in their bone piles...note how hard to see the new snares.

Yesterday was the FIRST time I have seen wolf tracks in over a month.I havent good bait this year - yet- so I am making due with what I have....thism one particular 'corner' of huge cedars is at a logging road intersection as well its a natural intersection of the valley bottom and a rock face.If the wolves come back soon they may hit the snares...if they come another month from now , who knows what the conditions will be...3 more ft of snow??....rain rain rain??? re set re set AAAARRRRRRGGGHHHH...
hehe......out the door again ...:lol:....same as anyother hunting...NEVER GIVE UP !

I have snares set at 4 different locations this year....4 places I have learned where the wolves WILL TRAVEL THROUGH CONSISTANTLY..earlier while REAL green I would follow a single track and snare off a spot..meanwhile , a wolf might not walk that track for a yr or two...I now know the regular routes and have sets and small amounts of bait....its a bit of a 'hail marry' but when they come through , I should eventually get one or two.....my kills normally dont pick up till a little later in the season...but I'm getting antsi!

Well.....no words can describe the amount of NON FUN today....
Took a gamble on wether or not I could even make it in to the 'Basin' on my sled and decided to come from the top....holy SHAT...water washed out lots of places , even a quad would have a bad time...I cant believe I got my sled out.....or in for that matter...
http://i443.photobucket.com/albums/qq155/proguide66/004-5.jpg

There were two cats strung up..pretty big ones to....

http://i443.photobucket.com/albums/qq155/proguide66/005-5.jpg

There were wolf tracks all over,,they had really pounded a perimeter circle off with numerous routes ect...they have been back this am as well as for maybe a week,,,hrd to tell with the melt...but they have been there lots since I wasd last....further looking found some blood , poop , and a bunch of tracks.....also a CHEWED OFF SNARE !...wich = wolf # 2 chew off this yr....
http://i443.photobucket.com/albums/qq155/proguide66/006-3.jpg

http://i443.photobucket.com/albums/qq155/proguide66/007-6.jpg
There wasnt much sign of extreme struggle...I'm thinking paw...as well almost the whole length of wire was there so it couldnt have been around his waste or base of neck..
http://i443.photobucket.com/albums/qq155/proguide66/008-2.jpg

As well , due to the extreme rain and melt...there was 4 distinct places wolves had walked right UNDER SNARES...AAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH:evil:......I could have had 6 wolves now wich would have been 2/3 of last yrs take....:(.

anyway...I really went at em...threw all I had at em due to the fact I have to canoe across the river and hike in now.....so I set all 60 snares I had with me:twisted:...I also re-set snares that were screwed due to weather changes.I went out and snared off the whole 'secure perimeter' area they have been pounding and as well followed main routes up to 200 yards away to bottle necks and snared those off to...
http://i443.photobucket.com/albums/qq155/proguide66/009-5.jpg

I then locked in the hubs on my sled..crashed it down wash outs...roled it...smashed up the front end..swore like no one has ever heard and came home......probably luvky I didnt have a few wolves , dont know how the hell I woulda got em out with me...well , before midnight anyway..

Well , I could probably get a permit for that area , natives own the line there. there is as well lots of human traffic in that area...my hands are full with what I have on the go now.

One important note for other trappers going for wolves and still learnign like me.
I watched Paaul Trepas video on wolf snaring. They showed some facts on scents ect..this has saved me LOTS of time and made things easier for me and today proved the facts on the video.
This season I have not bothered to wear gloves while setting....I did boil off my snares to discolor them but I'm not really worrying about scent like the previous yrs.
Sure enough , wolves are walking on top of my tracks and as well walking right near set snares as well under snares that were too high to nail em....either way , using my bare hands while setting , never made a diff.....I'm sure they wont be jumping into them tonight but after a few days of my scent trail wearing off I'll bet I'm going to have dead dogs in this area next time I go in.
I didnt see any tracks stop dead in front of snares...misses were just by the deal of the cards....I'll get em next time for sure!

Thats interesting, I thought that's always been "just the way it is" with trapping. Makes sense though

Steve, I have seen 1/16 cable get chewed through a few times while trapping with my wife's uncle. Neck catches too. And they seem to chew through without wrecking the area too much. After he switched to 1/8 cable there hasn't been any chew throughs, but a few close calls still. We caught a wolverine in a Lynx snare with 1/16 wire and it chewed it in a few bites, didnt even really mess up the trail it was set on. A few days later we caught that wolverine in a 3-30 and he was wearing that snare on the neck like he wanted it there. I'm not sure what the other fellas are using but 1/8 seems to be the way to go for wolverine and larger.

I actually ' just' switched to 1/16....had my first chew offs ever this season with the 1/8.....watched Inzanas wolf trap video and he slayed em with the 1/16...they are also WAYY harder to see and hold a loop on the smallest of branch....shall see soon how they do. I used over 75 of em the last 2 days where the wolves are hanging...shall see!!!

Me neither....I took a gamble hoping the snow was covered by timber enough to make it last...turns out the 'trail' was also a main drain for water.....once I started there was no turning around..just got worse and worse...I dont hunt in this area in the fall so I'm not familiar with the water routes or boulders...guess I know now!

did you make your new snares with pauls or marties springs an breakaways

Two questions:
Where do you get the camlocks for the snares? I want to grab a couple of dozen and make up some of my own.

and:

I've heard that if a dead cow left for bait was on heavy meds, antibiotics, etc, the wolves won't touch it. Any thoughts?
