Found a mule deer buck track while working once that was 13cm long (measured it with my scale rule)....never saw him...shoulda been hunting rather than working I guess! It was with a few does (judging by the tracks)

13 cm long what's that in real language in inches ?
lol
Size and shape of hoof, don't forget the front hooves are bigger then the back hoofs.
Bigger older bucks have wore the front hoofs points to rounded off.
One fella says, " If you can drop a big apple into the track, it's a keeper."
Jel -- hoof prints size and shape -- rocks wear the toe tips from pointy to rounded.

Isn't that hard to judge? Like people and bears, sometimes large bodied animals (including people) have large feet and aren't very big?

And don't hooves grow year round, like your fingernails? So, if a 'bigger older buck has his front hoofs rounded off' then it makes sense that he spends most of his time in the "rocks" as you stated? Not all big bucks live in the rocks, no?? I'm sure some would be happy to live in alfalfa fields year-round, no??

redcarpet shootin off like a m/x mi$$ile into a comet !!! Ye$ ?
Comparing deer's hoofs to humans feet is like apples and oranges lol.
Deer only eat 16 percent legumes in their diet, they would bloat if they only ate ally felfah. lol.
Compare some hoofs with other hoofs. Size, shape, marks, curves, length, width, and ma$$.
Also va hairy important is the depth they sink into the earths soils and forest floor showing body weight, which can tell a story by it$elf.
Jel -- deer don't have file$ to manicure their hoof$ lmao -- mu$t b a newbee -- lol -- $$$$$$$$$$$$$

Right on - I'm definitely a newbee!

Are you sure it's not 18% legumes??

The title of your thread was 'size of large hoof prints' not all aspects, including depth that they sink in soils, etc. How do you measure the mass of a hoofprint :-D?

I've never really measured the tracks; big tracks usally mean big deer.

I've heard that a bucks poo pellets are larger (as expected) and more pinched off to a point than a does. Have you heard or saw anything supporting this?

The 192 mulie I shot this year didn't have extremely large hoofs. He was a high country deer though and he lived on the rocks ;).

I think a lot of people think the deer is a lot bigger than it actually is when they see tracks in the mud and stuff.

I've seen some mighty big camel toe here in Kelowna. Usualy get deeper with age and weight. There is a cut off in age. The real old ones don't usualy have any. There are rare exceptions, usualy in smaller towns that have a good hunting population in late fall. ie: Beaverdel, Clinton, Logan Lake etc..
Some are nice, neatly packed ones that you just want to take home and eat as soon as you can while still fresh. Trophy camel-toe they call it and it is highly sought after. Hunting pressure is great with these ones.
Other camel toe can be big and nasty. And can eat you as fast as you can eat it. On the bright side, it's usualy ALOT easier to get and requires much less work to get in the freezer. And although you would still take it, you probably would not brag to your friends about it. Depending on the mood of the hunter, he will pass on this specimen. This seldom happens. Most just lie and "say" they passed when later reporting to friends.
Some hunters are happy, proud and brag about whatever they get.

Thanks Jel. After I cut the bottom of the legs off I try and make a print in the ground just so I can have an idea of the hoof size compared to the animal. Obviously everything grows proportionally with age but I for one don't always think that a huge track means a huge buck. My dad will likely disagree with me on this one because whenever he sees a decent size buck track he gets it in his head that its a big boy. I've shot some fairly small WT that have pretty decent tracks.

The hoofs on the mulie I shot were pretty worn down and although he was the biggest I've shot I have definitely seen bigger tracks. Someone else mentioned it on here before and I agree with them that terrain has a lot to do with it as well.
