With the big game seasons coming to a close in much of our wonderful province, many of us turn our thoughts to another predator hunting season :-D Time to plug in the Randy Anderson DVD's and drive your significant other crazy with your dying critter and coyote howler calls...lol. It's also time to decide what you'll be using this winter to put the smack down on wild cats & canines.
My vault has a few dedicated rifles I've chosen specifically for huntin' the hunters. First there's my coyote rifle for calling in the grain fields here in the north Peace. It's a M700 Synthetic ADL chambered in .223 and topped with a Burris 4.5x14x42 Fullfield II. This little gem loves the 40 round econo packs of Winchester 45gr HP's and quite often wears a bipod although there's always a set of homemade shooting sticks in the truck. Next up is a sweet little Winchester 9422Mag. This is my cat rifle for when setting up in the black spruce swamps covered with cat & hare sign. No scope needed for this country. Lastly is a rifle I purchased for my wife to shoot coyotes here at the farm, but I've come to "borrow" often. Very often. It's a sweet handling little blued/walnut Model Seven in .243 that wears a Leupold Compact VariX 3x9. It loves my handloaded recipe that features a 70gr soft point up front. This is the rifle I tote when predator calling in areas where wolves may be encountered.
Those are my choices, your mileage may vary. You must have a buddy that also wants to avoid the Christmas-shopping-at-the-mall scene as much as you do? Well do yourselves a favor and head out for some winter fur hunting fun.
So whats your choice of medicine for hunting the hunters?

I will also use a m700 in 223, unless something else comes along. Mounted on top is a Leupold VXII 3-9x40 with the LR duplex. Im shooting 50gr Speer TnT @ 3400 fps

http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/223_m700.jpg

in wolf country the m700 in 6.5 Panther gets thrown in the truck. I'll probably slap some 120gr Ballistic Tips @ 2950 fps in it for the winter. Scope is Leupold Mark2 3-9x40 with LR duplex. It kills coyotes too

http://predatorhuntcanada.ca/photos/data/500/Jan_25_09_005.jpg

if I get some new scope rings for Xmas I may lug around the Sendero 7mm SAUM. It's already proven itself once this year on mr Wile E, with 160gr Accubonds @ 2980 fps. Scope was Zeiss Conquest 4-14x44 but its been replaced with a Leupold vx3 4.5-14x40 Longrange, all I need now is 30mm rings

before any of these get much use in the field this winter I first have to get the house renovations done...:( yep Im pussywhipped!

Wow do I wish I had your guys gun selection.
I will be carrying a ruger 10/22 for cats if the shot presents itself. If not I'll be using the 6mm. It was also be used to destroy wolves and coyotes. The only thing I need to do is load some proper shells...

and on a side note I've watched byron souths video 3 times now ;)

I will be using my M700 Varmit Heavy barrel laminate in .22-250 with a Bushnell 6-18x50 and will shoot 50gr VMAX's for most everything. Usually pack some 60gr Sierra's for wolves but as I don't bump into them everyday, if I see one, it'll prob end up getting the VMAX.

If I go hunting specifically for wolves, I will most likely bring "Black Betty," my trusty ol 7RM Abolt II Stalker loaded with 162gr Hornady BTSP's.

Nice looking rig...on a side note, if you have an extra $100 or so kicking around, you might consider getting a longer Burris bipod. I don't know about you, but for me, as the snow gets deeper, it sure is nice to be able to still use the bipod. I find the shorter ones just that...too short! Just a thought!

Bartell, what the shit model is that 700 .223 with the magazine hanging out?

I will be using my Browning X-Bolt Composite Stalker .243 with a VX II 3-9x40 shooting some Hornady V-Max 87 grain boolitz. Well that is if I ever get out to give it a go.

Its a 700 SPS in a CDL walnut stock, with some goofy plastic magazine extender made by....ArmsTech...?. Holds 9 rounds down, which is cool if I run into a herd of man eating coyotes!

There are others out there like Rishu Pepper?

Is it a detachable magazine or box magazine?

box, just replaces the floorplate part of the bottom metal, to allow more shells to be pushed down. I havent hunted with it, just range shooting. If I dont like it I will just put the factory bottom metal on :) It was free, so I figured I'd try it. 9 rounds of 223 in a row is a good way to eat up my powder and bullet supply

Just in case yah don't know, There is no hunting season for hunting foxes anywhere in BC. But one would be worried about the same problem with a lynx.

Wish I lived somewhere up in the interior ,we don't have the predators that the main land has http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon9.gif ,guess I will have to try and get out for a few cat hunts this winter.
After the season closes down for most big game if I was to hunt predators latter on in the winter months my chose would be a 243 for small game and a 7mm for a cougar.

ID LIKE TO TRY TO CALL A COUGER IN,I WRECKON IT WOULD BE EASIER THAN CALLING A WOLF.BUT STILL VERY DIFICALT, AS WOLFS MOVE SO QUICKLY, SO CALLING TO FRESH TRACKS IS A LOTTERY ON WEATHER THERE STILL NEARBY,WERE I THINK IF YOU FIND FRESH COUGER TRACKS THERES A CHANCE IT COULD BE NEARBY STILL

22-250 for dogs and cats, for chasing wolfs I am going to use my 6.5-284 with 120g TTSX. Looking forward to taking out the boys to chase some critters.

Had a crack at a coyote just last weekend and missed the little bugger! Then I realized my scope was on 3.5 and it was a 300 yard shot. Never thought a coyote could move so quick! I will be ready next time. Cant believe my dying fawn call worked!

most of the time i see coyotes, they get the 338 with 180 gr accubond treatment, simply because i'm not actually looking for them. just doing my part for predator control, if i am looking they get the 700 bdl 22-250 with a 4-12 weaver prescription, seems to work well also...

Before I started watching Randy Anderson coyote hunting video's all I ever used was a fawn bleat, I was always amazed at how they came in to that call.

Now I also use a Ki-Yi injured rabbit and a few more rodent in distress hand calls + I now have a Foxpro FX3 electronic caller.

I can't afford a spare rifle, so for me, it's a Tikka T3 in 308 Winchester. It's hard on fur, but it's also hard on the coyote, which is what I have in mind more than anything. :)

Depending on the mood I'm in and how likely I am to run into wolves,
Sako Vixen 223AI with 40gr moly'ed vmaxes at 3850fps,
Or 53gr TSX's (moly'ed) at 3300fps

Or the 700 XCR 300RUM and moly'ed 168gr SMK's at 3350fps....That one is interesting, to say the least. Not really fur friendly though......grin
