So, my good buddy Mike has been hunting his butt off this year, burned every last day of his vacation time, every day off, and as of earlier today when I talked to him, was looking at a clean skunk for the year - no big game animals at all, zilch, zip, nada. When I talked to him, he was pretty much what you'd call depressed about the whole situation. He did mention, though, that he wasn't going to go out without giving it one last shot this evening.
So, anyway, The Wife(tm) still has a tag too, so we went out for a last try at a whitetail buck ourselves. Saw a 5 point bull elk with a nasty limp at 30 yards, some really nice rubs and tracks, and not much else. No big deal, the freezer has enough meat in it to make it another year. On the way home, as we were coming around the last corner before the house, I says to The Wife(tm) "Man, I sure hope Mike is sitting in the driveway with the biggest buck he ever shot."
Well, turns out he wasn't sitting in the driveway -- he was already out back in the woodshed working on getting the biggest whitetail he's ever shot preped for hanging and skinning. Saweeeet!!!!!
Story is pretty basic -- in the last few minutes of legal light, on the last day of the season, he was walking back to the truck in defeat, and stumbles on this guy standing there at 20 yards. The buck bolted as he swung around to pop him, but it was already too late. Two quick shots later, and here he is:
