quality compact binos

Is there a good set of compacts out there with strong magnification and a pair that let lots of lightin?

Letting "lottsa light" is all about the size of the objective len(s). Start with binos that have at least a 40 or 42 mm objective lens. compact binos usually don't go above a 30mm lens - which isn't too bad, just not good enough at first and last light.
