While out chasing mule deer, I was on the track of a buck which joined a doe track. I followed it for sometime when I came across this. I couldn't decide what caused it as there was only one track leaving in the fresh snow, that of a cat but I thought it to be a tad small for a cougar.

Couriousity getting the better of me, I walked in on the same spot today and I got a short look at a smaller cougar as it snuck out of the area. Here was todays scene. you can see the eye of the deer peaking out of the newly covered over meal after the cougar had its fill.

It had been bedded down just off of the kill, as it watched me approach before leaving. The area around the head was all smoothed out as to make me think it had spent a fair bit of time feeding on the deer.

Thats cool I only think of bears burying their kill but I guess a big cat would do it too. Took me awhile to find the eye in the third pic but I found it :)

Did you get a tape on the track? Did it still have its spots when you seen it leave?

No spots that I saw. Really only saw the hind end and tail, quartering away. Track was only about 2 1/2 x 3in, not much different from a wolf in size. Not the big snowshoe you'd like to come across.

Those the out side toes you measured I would guess. Glad you never shot it. Those small ones don't make much of a mount. You got to see more then most people will ever get to though. Pretty Kewl:wink:
