Great deer guys. Congrats to all involved. In the last week I have seen 12 bucks. But most were 2-points (my buddy took one) a couple spikes and one that I think was a 2x3. Just looking for the guy that wants to live on my wall tho.

Pretty ironic statement!

PG66's buddy Matt in Squamish returned from Alberta and was still buckless..So we all got up early this AM and headed down to hook up.

We were headed to a timbered ridge nearby. PG66 and Matt went up the south end, I was a few kms away and went up the north end. We were going to get up on top and head towards each other, maybe push some deer towards each other, and eventually hook up.

I headed up this really, really gnarly cliff face (I actually had to strap my rifle sling across my chest while I went rock climbing!) I am a bit larger now than when I used to rock climb back in the day, but my old experience sure came in handy!

Up into the timber I went, and my injured knee was starting to feel the effects of the rock climbing, I could feel it swelling up. Oh well, last chance for me to hunt this season, so just deal with it. I knew in a few hours I would be talking to PG66 and Matt, so I could then whimper like a sissy girl to them:wink:

After a few hours I heard a shot a couple of KMS away. I drew my cell phone out of my pocket and waited. Sure enough, it buzzed and Matt had nailed a buck! Rigth on!

I decided to head towards them but the shot sounded closer than I thought and my knee was hurting, so I decided to drop down out of the cliffs and into the smaller timber, hunt my way towards them and maybe we would bump into each other or maybe not.

About an hour later, I got into some real thick stuff and it had lots of rubs, so I was going slowly, and bleat calling as I went. TO my left I spied a buck coming up the hill towards me, so I froze. He was coming right to me. At about 20 yards, he stopped, in growth so thick it could have been in some tropical rainforest jungle...

All I could see was that he was pretty wide, and he looked like a really wide 2 point. I wasn't going to shoot, I was thinking "Nice body, big 2 point, this seems to be the 2 point season, should I shoot, naw I'm not going to shoot, oh what the hell, last day and I can always use some more sausage...Thread the needle and BOOM!"

The Mighty .375 Ruger took him in the shoulder, he bounced down the hill and then I didn't hear him anymore. My cell phone buzzed:mrgreen:

"What is he?"

"Dunno, big 2 point, I think he is out of my sight in the jungle."

"Okay, we will be done in awhile and we will try to hook up"

I didn't know if I had made a bad hit, so I sat down and did the whole "wait an hour and eat a sandwich" thing. But the sandwich was gone in 15 minutes, so I went and looked. Short blood trail, a few bounds- There he is!!

Pg 66 and Matt zeroed in on me about an hour later, and then we took group photos before butchering and loading on my Mystery Ranch pack (very comfy, BTW) and heading out together.

Great day, pics to follow!

nice going guys, pemberton is starting to look and sound like it's worth the drive from here.

Pemberton is the new Clearwater!!

Well, blacktails don't have nearly as much horn as a mule deer, so you gotta be a bit of a blacktail aficionado to put in alot of time and effort to get a good blacktail- and a good blacktail normally qualifies as a really mediocre mule deer...:-D

The deer migration in Pemberton is no real secret. There have ben a couple of government studies on this, which are public knowledge as far as I know. Most of the deer spend their summers down Meager Creek/Hurley road area, and then make their way along the ridges of the Pemberton Valley to the Mackenzie Lake area, where they winter.

The migration route and where they are on a certain date is totally dependent on the weather. This year there was lots of snow, so the bucks get pushed down, quicker. The key to larger bucks, as with most deer hunting, is GET OUT OF YOUR TRUCK AND OFF THE FS ROAD and get into the steep, ugly bush.

If you are just interested in "any buck" then the road will offer up deer of course. ANd you may get lucky and nail a big one on the road- it happens every year.

No kidding...

The "Pemberton area" stretches out to the Hiurley/Meager area, to the Darcy/Seton area, up the Duffey Lake road at least until Joffre, and down Lillooett Lake road.

All these areas contain bucks, some big, some small, but they are all there. Think about how the Lilooett Lake ties into Harrison Lake and how many big bucks came form there!

Pemberton area = HUGE area, but blacktails are hard to hunt..very hard!

He is *somewhere* during the day...Hunt all day, go into the thick forest to find him.

In the last few years I am thinking about time of day for shooting a deer and they have been all over the map, from first light to last light of the day and everything in between.

In the last few years I am thinking about time of day for shooting a deer and they have been all over the map, from first light to last light of the day and everything in between. One small problem, the work factor. Also, it is tough to spend the whole day in the bush in the pissing rain day after day after day. I have been doing it for 3 weeks straight. I usually hunt until 10am, go to work then back at 3:30 for the last hour. He is going to slip up one of these days and blam, I will be there. We are getting a break from the rain for a few days so I will spend one full day in there. As you posted with your buck, I am pretty sure he is bedded up in the treeline in the nasty vertical crap, watching me. The second rut should be coming on soon.

Just wondering if these bucks were taken on Saturday 28th. I myself did a little trip to the hill to my honny hole. I heard a few shots close to where I was that day a few ridges over from me. I have taken a 4pt with brows that scored 130" the pic is in my gallery. This Sataurday I never got a shot at a monster on my way to the honny hole. Whan I got there I sat down to have my lunch and decided to do the doe call thing. I never know if it is scaring them away or what but from the time I got my lunch out till the time I shot this little guy was less then 2 minutes. I sat down opened my sandwitch took a bite gave 5 short calls I then put my lunch down grabbed the gun (about 30 seconds had passed from the calls) when a doe with a buck 3pts one side 2pt with brow on other side in hot pursuit 25 yards from me trying to sneek around behind me. I shot him at about 11:30am, missed the big guy at around 9am heard 3 shots around 10am. This is how I get to my honny hole. Hard to get them back to the truck though when your by yourself.
Glad to see there are crazy BT hill side hunting freaks like me.
