Well, almost had a nice double header whitey... My partner and I were both sitting in a ground blind overlooking a sweet river bottom field. The witching hour arrives and out pops a nice buck on my side of the field below, but he hangs up at ~400 yards doggin' a doe that ain't movin'. I watch him in the spotter for a bit, hopin' he'll come in a bit...

In the meantime, a bruiser runs across the the far edge and into a coulee. He pops out right in front of us ,at 400 for a few seconds but has serious tail on his mind and isn't stoppin' for anything. He drops back into the coulee and kicks out a smaller buck into the field that walks directly at my partner from 400 to 200, turns broadside and takes the big dirt nap. I was psyched for my pard as it's his best whitey to date...

My buck isn't phased by the shot and stands in the field staring at the doe until dark. I might have taken the shot BUT Bartell failed to ship my rush-order 185 TSX's for my 338 that I ordered to load up especially for this hunt... and I never got them in time...

That's why you have hunting partners, so they can shoot the animals?

185tsx, I assume 338 Mag? What bullet do you usually use? even with a 225gr bullet the 338 Mag shoots sufficiently flat out to 400 yards, if you know how your rifle shoots. Ballistic tables show that there is only two inches of difference in bullet drop at 400 yards between 185gr and 225 gr! :-D

Wow - you can read. Are you trying to make excuses for your buddy? I only had 3 loaded shells left and I needed to check my zero after a bump. I also wanted to practice more at 300+, cause I knew long shots were required on the hunt.

The reason that I didn't shoot was I didn't have a rangefinder with me AND my brother-in-law just missed several shots at a buck and I didn't want to take away his new "Many Misses" title... I was just hasseling Bartell - he actually helped me out with some load data, was professional and a good sh!t. ;)

Thanks guys!

Steady - I think they would both count but I doubt he'll be scored. Based on his teeth and the area we figure he was only ~3 years old. He just had great genetics and woulda been a stud in 2 years...

Here are a few of my late mentor's bucks that were didn't make it on the wall. We were out on that hunt honouring him... he was an amazing guy and true sportsman!

No need for excuses, Bartell's excellent service is legendary and he doens't need anyone to provide excuses. :tongue:Just pointing out that a 225gr in a 338 is still pretty flat shooting, and a 185gr bullet likely wouldn't have made much difference in hitting the buck.:-D

Regardless, you guys got a real nice buck, and it sounds like you had a great day!:-D
