I was unable to accompany Bartell on his introductory blacktail hunt today, as I had to go to Vancouver, and I am one sad boy, I woudl have loved to have been out there with the boys, of course.:(

They left at 430 or5 am, and The Girl and I were hitting Squamish about 8AM. We stopped at Timmys and I couldnt help but put my binoculars up to check out where I knew they were going...Didnt' see them, of course- Way to far.

A few hours later my cellphone rang and I heard the news!:-D

Very happy for Bartell and PG66! Wish I could have been there for the exciting hunt, you guys had a WAAAAY better day than |I did, running around Van!

I left Gatehouse's guest cabin @ 4:30am en route to the hunt zone south of W town

We headed through the timber in the darkness, head lamps lighting the way as we followed blocky buck tracks, through the cedars and into and around openings, tons of rut activity from the night. Hopefully we would luck into a mature buck! Things were looking good, from the amount of fresh tracks in the snow.

My expert guide, PG66, positioned me on the fringe of the cover, watching a small meadow as he circled upwind to try to push any deer across my position. Nothing showed until PG66 waved me over to join him, where he had cut the trail of a hammer blacktail buck.

Not far into the trail, PG66 told me to chamber a round in my Remington 700 Titanium 260 Remington, as he was confident that we would be onto a boone and crockett buck within minutes, due to the large amount of rubs in the area. We carried on, myself following my guide, ready for action.

We come across an opening, when my guide buck grunted, and mere moments later I heard a hissing sound from above us. I passed it off as a bird, or something. We slowly made our way to the far side of the clearing and my guide began another series of buck grunts, and again it I heard the hissing, and I asked my guide if he had heard it too.

As we discussed my guides lack of hearing, I seen his eyes go like this :  ....... and he said "shoot that deer,........ shoot that deer........" I slowly turned, to see a hammer blacktail buck peering through the salal at us. Not one to doubt my guides judgement, I simply flipped up my scope lens covers, pushed safety forward and took aim at the bucks shoulder, a mere 22 yards distant

kerrrbeeeoooommmmmmmm >>>>>> the echo of the 260 Remington reports across the foggy morning air. The buck leaps forward and out of sight in the rodo jungle, a few seconds of crashing and all is silent. I look over at my guide, who's eyes are still like :  His hands are shaking and I am not sure what the big deal is, all I did was shoot a deer

we walked up, found the location of impact, noted some hair in the snow (short and curly), followed them for a few then found the blood, and shortly after spotted the buck ahead

the end

its not a gun, it's a bowling ball my guide pack for good luck  And the X2 worked well, ideal to pack 60ish lbs in? no. but it worked! I'm gonna email the pic of the buck in the pack to Eberlestock and hopefully they use it in a 2010 catalog and cut me a cheque for $15,000, or 10k would even be ok

I've hunted in here for 6 years now and I've only ever seen one buck that big, and it was a lost mulie...it's just not fair...hah. Congrats on the buck (i guess)

Strange, I've never hunted mulies or whitetails so I thought the hissing that blacktails do was normal...I've heard it on several occasions.

Im ashamed to admit it was a factory loaded 120gr Federal Fusion  Muzzle velocity usually runs about 2850 fps, and on this shot it didn't have much time to slow down. Hit the left shoulder right on the leg bone, busted it up real good. It didn't even leave the chest cavity. No exit, weak blood trail, but it worked. Next year, 100gr TTSX @ 3200 fps

Does the deer qualify as a blacktail in the record books? They draw the line very close to the ocean, even if the deer is very obviously a blacktail like yours.

Where did you get it? (I know it is in the thread, but there are a LOT of pages here!)

Sorry, not looking for secrets. Just wondering how many mountain ranges east of Harrison Lake you got the deer. I think that Harrison lake is as far as B&C will go for blacktail. Not sure though.

If you mean west of Squamish, then it definitely qualifies.

Looking forward to it, incredible buck by the way. I am from the island and although it is tempting for us all to jump on a ferry seeing a buck like that it just makes me a little bit more determined to find that monster here. It is awesome to see those pictures, it motivates us all to put in just that little bit more work for the upcoming season that can lead you to a 'well deserved' buck. They are out there and this next season I am stoked to find them, congrats to all the guys that found their dream buck this past season!

I shot over 20 bucks on the island and my biggest was 124.....shot a shit load here and pass on 110-115 regular....as far as the 'Bartel buck goes , was 5 miles inside the B&C 'line'.......again , when I lived on the island , nothing more frustrating than seeing shit like that getting driopped.......I'll do my best to keep em coming !!

Very nice! Glad to see that you had a picture of the tail. There was a young hunter at the Big Buck Contest in Campbell River that had a beauty of a Blacktail Deer (in my opinion), that was scored as a Mule Deer. The antlers showed the characteristics of a BT, but because of the height of land (somewhere in the Pemberton area), for scoring purposes; it was deemed to be a Mule Deer. It was a real nice buck at 128+, but no picture of the tail...

I thought there was a measurement that they could take between the antlers to determine how it is scored? Something like 3" between bases its a blacktail and 3.5" scores it as a Muley?

For a side note , Pemberton deer have been tagged collared and studied. Does have made it from just out of town all the way to just shy of Goldbrige. This basically shows that Pemberton deer are hybrids for sure...BUT , you still have to go a way's out to find a 'muley' ass and ears on em. this is why the local BTail enthusiasts DONT hunt Pemberton...who wants a 'soiled' blacktail? that 'lesser' gene in em makes em too easy to hunt to...:-P...You want a monster pure blacktail you have to head down the Lilloette river...or towards the salt chuck.

Wouldnt fly as every species has the odd 'freak' wich has VERY large physical traits throughout . From deer to sheep sometimes you get very small features that can fool any 'expert' into shooting it and as well sometimes you get the odd freak wich is monstrous in every way. Their skulls grow with age as well.
Imagine drillin a freakin monster animal from say 'Cowichan' , bring it in to get measured and its 3.5 ..oops , sorry its a muley !

Thanks pg66. There was a person that explained this theory to me at the scoring event at Tyee Sports (toward the end of the evening). I pointed out that the racks that were there were all different between the bases and there were some that beat the 3.5 theory. I like to measure between the eye sockets...that's the way to tell if it's a doe or buck! LOL

The bugs and heat can take a hike, got stung 3 times on my way to hang a stand the other day. The one that got me on the head never felt a bee sting like that before, making a nest right on the trail to my stand the scum.

This post is good motivation, counting the days until late Oct. through Nov for Blacktail
