Biggin Fraser Valley Blacktail

Well all the work has finally paid off this year. These are the pics from my buddy's blacktail taken November 14/09. He has posted a previous thread "looking for blacktail info" regarding this deer.

The story goes.... Were both new to hunting and have spent countless hours obtaining and trying to learn as much as we can on the sport. I was lucky enough to shoot a nice 4x4 mulie for my first deer ever last year however, as happy as i was, i did feel like it was cheating as it was a road hunted deer. Nevertheless, from that point on I have been hooked! We both spent many hours in the bush prior to the season opening trying to pattern our local blacktails. We found some great areas, dialed in travel patterns found tonnes of sign and saw many deer both bucks and does. We were confident that we would each take deer shortly after the season open. Well that never transpired, the deer seemed to vanish so the work began again trying located huntable area with deer. By mid October we had again found a valley that appeared to have many deer and good amount of sign. We were seeing good numbers of does every time we went out, yet no bucks. We both figured that presistence would pay off so we continued to put miles on the quad and our boots heading in and hunting this area. Sure enough the bucks began to show up. We farmed our first three opportunies due to inexperience however, learned huge amounts of information by doing so. I finally shot a nice 3x2 blacktail on November 2 and couldn't be happier.

We hunted our area all day November 14 with only seeing tracks in the snow. As well to our surprise we also saw two other hunters in the same area. We decided to move lower in the valley and check out an area we have seen deer crossing the road on a number of occassions. We parked the quad, and hooffed it into the bush. We decended the valley in a draw with significant deer use as a well used trail was cut into it. We again found tonnes fresh sign and 3 very recent rubs. We new there was a buck in the area. We stopped numerous times to call without any success. . We had 45 minutes of light left and we decided to stick it out till dark. We had just pooped back out on the road and "DEER" at 60 Yards. I put the binos up, confirm a doe and BUCK! Mark lines up and I say to him, wait till he turns broad side to shoot. I grunt at him, and he turns and looks....bang. The rest is history. All our hard work paid off this year and what a buty!

My guess would be around in the hi 120 area gross ,I myself have not been able to find one like this on the island ever ,this young man as a challenge over his hunting carrier to better this rack ,you can tell he is an older deer by looking at the base of the anlers there thick and have lots of nubbies all over the base ,again congrats to you on getting a hog of a BTD of a life time http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon14.gif.

Tough call on the score without the ears laid out to the sides to look at from a photo.....first glance made me think 140's...I'll bet the left nut he's in the 135 range....the mass is rediculous and carries all through each inch and he's symetrical...the photo could be decieving but he looks maybe 22 wide????...one smoker buck

It's a mountain deer. If you can believe it I had an opportunity at a deer in the same general area about two weeks before this guy. He didn't present a shot before high tailing it out of there, but i can only assume this is the same deer. He was 300 yards away and i didn't have a chance to but the binos or the scope on him to confirm details. All i knew is he was LARGE. I'm keeping my hopes up that it was a different deer and well get another crack at him next year. Were gonna leave this valley alone for the rest of this year. I told my buddy theres no point for him to ever go back there again.

Just got home from the taxidermist he scored it at 145 gross . That is an unofficial messurment but thats what he came up with. I will be getting it scored by an official scorer.

Man I am speachless. That is about the nicest BT I have seen. A huge congrats to you guys. Keep that area as tightlipped as possible its a beauty spot. He will have bred a few times over and his genetics should be prominent in the area.

I put a tape on this buck and it was 144 and change(green & gross) with 7 7/8 bases. just a wicked BT. I am hoping he will bring it by to show it off on the 12th. It will not be able to be officially scored yet but it will go deep in the book. It will be an impressive mount that is for sure.
