I don't take scenery pics without someone or something
in them so... unfortunately your stuck with me or my uncle.

My uncle riding north of Ram Mtn.

Our camp just north of the calving barns. They burned all the willows out south of the barns where we normally stayed. Good thing we had lots of stakes, otherwise we'd have woken up looking at the stars some nights.

Yours truly looking out over the south end of McGhee flats.

Beautiful country David, no question about it!!

I don't get to see much of that nice stuff when I hunt down there because I'm usually quite a bit higher in the thicker bush way up between 5 and 6000 feet. Even the last week of the season the big boys are up there while camps and hunters are spread all through the bottom of the Empire / Churn.

Now that I know how to do it, I'll put some deer pics in when I get a chance.

BCR,

I'll try pushing thru some timber one of these trips but
part of the fun for us is the horses and they're pretty much useless in the trees. (I'd hate to have to walk somewhere!)

I always liked taking horses into "the trees". They know somethings there long before you do.

Some guys that go there have been going for 15-30 years. One group we called the hair farmers, pretty sure they didnt believe in shaving or haircuts
Haven't been there in years but would like to go way back in there some time.
If you come back skunked you will still come back revived, beautiful place.

Beauty country, flipped a boat in the Fraser a ways down from Churn years back and spent the night. Was not so beautiful that day!

David. Any chance, a few years back, you shot a four-point that had a piece off hay bale wrapper stuck on his antlers? Looked like a plastic bag from a distance.

I'd love to go for a horseback trip all through that country and take in the scenery and glass up sheep and some deer.

Sort of like the bird man who likes to see dogs working pheasants in Alberta / Montana without actually shooting them.

The scenery is spectacular.

Jetting. In the dark. With a forest fire breathing down your arsecrack. I love the churn. I love the churn so much I may never go back

Love that picture. Reminds me of my childhood sharing camp with my parents and relatives. That is what our game poles would look like after a weekend hunt. Loaded to the breaking point with deer, pheasants, rabbits and other critters. Those where the days.

You mean this one! I was planning on posting this to see who it was so I could get the pics to them. Hope it's OK to post pics of someone else.

I had hit him poorly on a short shot earlier that day in 2005 in the trees
and had tracked the blood to the valley floor where I lost him in the sage.
The hit was high up on the right front and wasn't slowing him up that much.
When I got to the bottom in the sage I asked another group if they'd seen a buck come past and they indicated no. I then glassed him several hundred yards towards the Churn rim and tried to get into position for a shot. He kept moving closer to the rim and when I was within about 250 yds ish of him and had him in the scope... a shot rang out and he went down.

These two young guys from PG had come up from the Churn and seen him on the lip and tipped him over for me. I took a couple pics of them and didn't get an email addy to forward it on. But here they are.

http://www.trophyphotos.com/photos/full/18877.jpg

We field dressed him and I hiked back in the dark back to the road and then came back the next AM with a pony to carry him out.

The plastic was a shredded up feed bag and I dilligently hid it in the furthest corner of the garage to put on him when he came back from the taxidermist. Of course my clean freak wife found it and well, you know what happened.

They downed it & you kept it?
A couple of gents for sure!
A lot of guys I talk to say, "if it's not down ,it's fair game".

man those photos sure bring back memories..promised a Redels mSports employee Clem to show him over 100 deer before NOON in one day..and over 30 would be bucks...was able to do that...somewhere have a photo of a 196 deer shot on the rd by the place David has his tent...been mostly down low during SEPT there are always a few sleeper bucks down low while guys drive by and go above....however its been my observations over the past 30 years that the biggest bucks are much higher on the mtn and steeper thicker stuff..

One year stayed almost too late...started to snow..like it is today in Williams Lake...and once the level had reached 20 " plus the big boyz started to move got a 300 # buck rack wasnt any screaming hell..past prime??? but I had to follow the grader out with my Toyota....

Flying over the area in helicopters for years also gives me a bit of an edge for info.......

great photos guys..I will dig up a couple...
cheers

Steven

Wait in the evening south of the calving barn and you'll waylay one coming into the fields for grazing. You won't have to carry her far that way.

Yup!
I guess it depends on who you run into.
We had some guys get around some buddies that had put 2 shots into a decent moose. They shot it & then waited til dark to bring it through our camp. We knew it was the same moose, but they denied it over & over again.
We ended up letting it go with a "we're glad it's down & not out there suffering". I guess some guys need it more than others.

Those two fellas were in our hunting party.
I was one of the guys sitting in the sage flat. I just saw the buck limping out of the sage heading for the Churn breaks. Too far for us to shoot. I knew the two other fellas were on the rim glassing the Churn. I radioed them and said use every bullet they had to stop the buck from making it down into the river bottom. If he made it, he'd never be found untill the ravens gave away his resting place. Good it all worked out.

I've spent many dawn-til-dusk days sitting on those hills with a spotting scope.

It's still beautifull country. But it was better hunting before it was a park.

Great photos by D.H. & members! Keep them coming!:-D
The photo with 9+ deer hanging was not uncommon in the area back in the late 60’s

Just came across this site today while doing some Empire Valley searches-by Chris Kind- unbelievable photos new and old mostly of Gang and Empire.

My Dad bought that book last year. It's very straightforward and easy to read as even the Author points out. Man those cowboys sure had it tough!

Here are some of our pics:
