So my dad asks me if I'd like to tag along on his buddies LEH moose hunt up west of Quesnel this year. Since I wasn't doing anything else I said YES! I helped load the camper and boat on Tuesday night at my parents place in Langley and we were to leave on Wednesday morning at 7am.

So we roll out of the driveway at 8:30am and are on our way, fuel up and grab coffee at the Co-Op in aldergrove on the way out. Stop in Cache Creek for a "gormet grilled cheese" and then refuel in Williams Lake. Lots of deer on the sides of the road between Williams Lake and Quesnel. Grab some Chinese food on our way through Quesnel to our first destination; A friends hunting cabin just off West Fraser Road. We arrived at 5:30pm, eat, have a few drinks and then bed. Everyone else seems to get an excellent sleep but for some reason I get stuck in the room with the box spring with a foamy on it and sharing with the water tank, so I slept a total of about an hour.

5:30am I crawl out of "The rack" and head out to the camper in the driveway where my dad already has breakfast and coffee goin. Eat and coffee and ready to go. On our way out to set up Moose camp 09 somewhere in 5-13a by 6:30am. We arrive at the site and start seting up camp at 10am.

Had camp set up and the camper off the truck and set up by 1:00pm. Had lunch and went to check out a few roads. Found some fresh sign on the first road about 1 km from our camp and nothing other then that in the way of sign. Too dark to shoot by 4:30am so back to camp for dinner. Plan to hit the first road at first light and glass some cut blocks. My dad and his buddy plan to road hunt the entire time, but I like to walk glass and track, so the plan was to drop me at a side road just up the main road a ways with a radio. Have a couple drinks and try to go to sleep but the loggers decided to pull double shifts probably about a km away but it sounded like it was right on top of us. A couple of hours of very sporratic sleep later and it was 5:30am and breakfast time. Bacon eggs and toast for breaky and coffee with a shot of irish creme to help wake up and we are loaded and off to our first road at first light(about 7am).

We turn up the first road and stop to glass the first cut block about half a km in. Nothing the next stop is the side road to drop me off. Drive about 100 yards around the corner and my dads bud says "Moose!". About 100 yards ahead of us on the left side of the road is a moose standing there. I see what looks like 4 ears and say "Bull!" My dad says "Is it a bull???" and his bud says "Ya it's a bull" So my dad yells "shoot it!". His bud jumps out of the truck and chambers a round I jump out and load my rifle for backup. Not needed. One neck shot and the bull was down where he stood... Hunt over!

I was hoping it would take a bit longer and be able to do some more hunting but we were done. Oh well. Back to the hunting cabin it Quesnel. The cabin is on 160 acres so I spent a day looking for a 4 point muley there but only saw 15 or so does, one spike buck(really wierd looking, spikes were a foot high and only about 2 inches apart the whole way up) and a nice 3 point, but for the life of me I couldn't grow another point on him. Oh well maybe next year. We were home Sunday by 5:30pm.

Lol I had a great time. I was hoping to be gone a few more days. It was way too easy, we didn't even have to try. This was the only Moose we saw for the 3 days. The owner of the hunting cabin daughter had a draw in area b and they only saw 1 cow in 7 days.

How do you guys like my dad's portable garage... er uh wall tent? lol

Yeah, spent a week in one worse than that!. And I'm the one in a wheelchair..
Although I do like his stove..Hell of alot better than the one we had, every time you open it up, smoke would billow out and choke you to death!.:(

A quick but successful trip, good for you guys. I have always wondered why people don't use these portable garages as wall tents. They are water proof and have a frame, easy set up, why not?

The stove was awesome. Heaviest camp stove ever! He made it out of a 30" piece of .250 x 18" pipe. cut a line down the length of it and spread it with a bottle jack. Then welded a 12"x30" piece of 1/4" to the edges. The legs are old really big turnbuckles cut in half(adjustable legs for level). The chimney was made from left over pieces of exhaust from a cummins deisel, and the flange at the top to protect the tent was the old pool heater door. The temp got down to -17c and it was toasty warm in the tent. once there are coals in there you can throw a whole 2'x8" log in and it will burn for 3 hours with the damper half open. With the damper open all the way the stack glows red about 3 feet up.

20'x10' wall tent = $1500+

20'x10' Portable garage from princess auto... $200

The only difference really being a wall tent is canvas and the garage is a tarp. Just a lil more heat loss.

Meat was clean. we gutted it and loaded it straight into the back of the truck on a tarp and then right into the hanging sticks from the truck.... the low temps for a couple days helped set the meat up good too.
