Finally my region 8 season has come to an end. Ive been seeing alot of bucks the last couple weeks and have passed on over 25 in that time span. The biggest buck was a nice typical that will be a real smoker in a couple years if he survives this season. Here's a photo of that buck.

I saw alot of smaller bucks and many of them were 4 points. I just couldnt find a deer i wanted to shoot.

Today i decided to hit a spot that was familiar to me. The area is a known mule deer winter range and i hadnt been seeing any deer up high where i hunted the day before so i figured they were all down low. I started up the FSR and couldnt believe the amount of tracks on the road. It was already light out so i was driving fast trying to get to my glassing spot. As i made my way through a selectively logged cutblock i spotted a doe so i stopped the truck to make sure there wasnt any other deer with her. I didnt see any until i looked out my passenger window. I looked up on the slope above my truck and spotted what appeared to be a nice buck walking away from me at 150-200 yards. A quick look through the binos confirmed the deer was nice so i jumped out and hammered him. When i got up to the deer i was a little disappointed. The buck has some wicked genetics and i ended his life a couple years too early. The amount of mass this young deer has is just incredible. I wouldnt be surprised if he was an offspring of a buck i found a shed off of that would be in the 200"+ range less than a km from where i shot this buck. I cleaned the buck and loaded him in the back of the truck and drove the rest of the way up to my glassing spot. I knew id see a good buck in this spot so i started glassing and spotted him right away. He was chasing does through some subalpine openings on a slope 2.5kms from me. I could see he was a heavy 4 point with decent forks and appeared to be bigger than the buck in the back of my truck. I pulled out my camera and videod the buck chasing does through chest deep snow. 30 yards away from this buck was a bull elk feeding on some subalpine fir trees. On a slope off to my left i was able to spot a young bull moose. So far this has been the best day of my hunting season thus far and one i will remember for a long time! For those wondering, this is a Princeton deer . And that second buck will be waiting for me until next year.

Nice Job Matt, thats a nice buck, fantastic genetics. Don't beat yourself up too much about killing him before he gets to be a 200" buck, walking around in the open like that, someone would have popped him if you hadn't.

Congrats,

Is that snow or is there still milk on his lips? Nice looking buck and should make for a nice Euro. Young like that he'll be tastey too. With the season you've had thus far should be interesting to see what else you hammer this year.

Nice work matt like you say that buck looks to be from a good gene pool.Ground shrinkage is a bitch but that is a very nice buck and 99 % of us would have ditched the truck to get the shot off, good work!
