Whats the basic breakdown on breeds of hunting dogs? Obviously you've got retrievers but past that I don't know alot, I've read about dogs for cats and of course coon hounds, just curious what other options there are.

I've got a sighthound cross right now, great dog but scared to death of any loud noise so not much use in the woods but I'm sure she'd love a buddy ;-)

There's the good hunting type, and the not so good hunting type, and everything in between, all based on genetics......... A specific breed does not make a "hunting" dog, the genetics do.

Any dog that will retrieve is a "hunting dog" the dogs that are registered as hunting dogs were used specificaly as hunting dogs therefore earned the title. My Portuguese water dog isn't recognized as a hunting breed , but i put as much confidence in him as i would any other breed.....Why you ask? let the pictures speak for themselves.

Basic breakdown is (as i know it)
retrievers: lab
flushers: springer
pointers: german short hair
trackers: blue tic
obviously there ar a bunch of other dogs out there but to me these are the 4 groups of hunting dogs. And my to picks, except i dont hunt coons or cats so i know nothing of hounds.

Just a general comment with no basis of fact, but I'd bet that there are dogs all over the world that are used for hunting everything and anything that is hunted.

That's a good list that Angle posted except the third breed in. I have a APBT and if he's ANY indication of the breed they're terrible hunting dogs!! lol!! Loves the bush, loves to go hunting.....but is really no good at it! Great at spooking everything off the mountain(actually not bad for scouting that way I guess, If they're there he'll get'em moving so you can see them!!lol).

I've been taking my 2 1/2 yr old German Wirehaired Pointer out with me hunting this season. He's always on leash and will heal & whoa for me on command which is essential. Very difficult for him to still hunt with me though, has lost me 2 4-points this season by making noises and movement when they were close. But what a nose, walking with him is great as he'll stop and point direction when he has a strong scent. I'll be studding him soon if anyone is interested.

Don't forget the venerable Jack Russell, they are fantastic little dogs, give them a blood trail and watch them work. I would never think of bow hunting without a jack back home.

I guess you got a good Jack Russel. my friend has one and it is nothing but a pain in the a$$. it is always jumping and bouncing or running around going insane. Its like a little tazmanian Devil:twisted:, I have no idea how they live with that boy. But that is my only experience with Jack's.

Jack Russels are good, but Fox Terriers are better, imo. After all the JR is basically a runt FT!

I also really like Airedale Terriers.
