Well....I gotter dun early this year.
Not very often I cut my region 8 tag before the 10th.
2 days ago I had the most exceptional day of my mulie hunting life.
I saw a great buck, my gun just did its thing, 1 shot from my .300 mag. 180gr fusion through the heart, the buck hit the ground like a sack of hammers, and my tag was cut .
Let me start by saying that I have busted my ass this year, 10 times harder than I ever have in my life!
(Picked up 117 sheds this year)
I ate my tag last year for the first time in my life and that really hurt my ego as a muley guy.
I guess that drove me to take it to the next level this year.
I spent 3 nights solo, in a mummy bag, in a 1 man tent, in the grizzly infested alpine. (no brambles to save me)
Searched for the elusive monster I photoed in august, but couldnt squeak more than 170 from any of the alpine bucks I saw.

I pounded the local hills for elk with passion this year, although I didnt get one, I saw lots and have them figured for next year. pretty confident Ill get an elk locally next year!

Right after elk closed, we started pounding hard for mulies, 3 of my buddies have all bagged nice bucks before me (160-175" typicals) All of which were backpacked out from the bush.

We have been hiking from dark to dark for quite a few days straight, seeing and passing on lots of nice bucks, but none worthy of the effort ive been putting in! Nov. 5 was my day, all stars finally aligned.
I had my cross hairs locked, and safety off, on 3 other deer that day, a cool 5x6 non-typ, a huge 3x5, as well an honest 175" typical!
I had the pleasure of sneaking to 75 yards and viewing all of these deer for 10-15 minutes each. (none even saw me)
As i lingered on these deer 2 phrases went through my mind....."you cant shoot a big one if yer skinning the little ones".
As well the muley crazy one, (see Dana sig line)
I couldn't believe the bucks that I had passed on, my day was already one for the history books, Id seen nearly a dozen bucks and was making my way back to the truck before dark.
I was hunting a very steep mountain side, it was very windy and the deer were hiding in the draws to escape the harsh winds.
I had 1 more draw to look in before I was done, I had just got off the phone with meathead, we talked about the great bucks we'd seen and he was already at the truck. I said Ill be there in an hour, he said "good luck".
10 minutes later I saw this guy at 100 yards. It only took me about 5 seconds to make my decision and I don't regret it!

http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/../photos/data/500/2009_Edited_Buck.jpg
It was an hour before dark, and I still had to hike out. I snapped a couple quick pics, did the 3 minute gut job, dragged him 100 yards from the guts into the open, GPS'ed the spot and boggied for the truck by dark.

http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/../photos/data/500/medium/IMG_3556_Medium_.JPG (http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/../photos/showphoto.php?photo=16065&size=big&cat=recent&limit=recent)
We returned the next day with an extraction team, when they saw him all they wanted to do was hunt the area. I had seen a total of 16 bucks and only about 10 does, but My wife and I didnt see a single deer before noon that day????

http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/../photos/data/500/medium/edited_georgia.jpg (http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/../photos/showphoto.php?photo=16064&size=big&cat=recent&limit=recent)

Heres my wife packing out the head and cape, Meathead and myself packed at least 50lbs of boneless each, for an hour hike out!

He has 7 scorable points on both sides, a few tickers that dont quite make an inch, a broken eyeguard, and a large abnormal point broken as well.
Best part is gobs of mass, over 40 inches in masses.
As for the thread title, everyone whos seen it just says.......
"Thats a HAAAWWWWG"
You guys can plug away at scores, Ill post the score later tonight, I apologize for taking 2 days to post up but we hit the beers last night and put the feet up, was way to tired to play computer!
Ok Im done!

Well, sure if you want, here they are!

This pic shows the base of the broken abnormal point on the driver side, would of been a nice long point I figure, and a very recent break as well! Hopefully my shed finding eyes will locate the missing tine, or the rival buck that broke it!

and another......

Size 14 boot here!

On another note, the deers body was about average for a mature buck IMO, but the taxidermist was freaking out at the size of the ears and skull! He measured the skull and said it ties the largest muley skull hes ever seen! The ears were a full inch longer than a large muley ear???

That is the first sign of weakness and laziness.
I bet I covered more ground in the past 3 months than the buck I killed, and then one day I hit the jackpot.... as for the magical spot, I took my wife there the next day with high hopes, hunted hard till noon and never saw a single deer!

On another note, the deers body was about average for a mature buck IMO, but the taxidermist was freaking out at the size of the ears and skull! He measured the skull and said it ties the largest muley skull hes ever seen! The ears were a full inch longer than a large muley ear???

Mark,

Sure is one hell of a buck man! I know you've heard it before but all your hard work, shed hunting, pure determination and miles and miles of hiking has paid off once again! As far as people are concerned, you can give them the exact location of the mass filled, tri-plus-palm, hawg! but they still have to put in the time and understand the habits of such a bruiser of an animal.

You really did it this time Mark can't wait to see it at the Fish & Game banquet later this year. Atta boy!!

So...what did he end up scoring?

Score smore, this was a unique charactor buck!
I knew before I shot him he was no book deer!
But he was just to dam heavy and cool to pass on!
He's got nearly 41" of mass measures, and thats pretty awesome for any muley!
He's got gobs more mass in places that dont get measured! :(
He certainly doesnt lend well to the B&C scoring system!
As mentioned he's got a few broken points but his mainframe goes 177 4/8, add 10 5/8 trash and he grosses 188.
Had he not broken his tines hed be in the high 190's for sure.
I called it nearly perfectly after I shot him, I said he had a 180 main frame and about 10 inches of trash.
He would of been all of that too but a number of small stickers were 1/8 shy of an inch.
On another note, ive returned to that same area twice now with the wife and it seems all the deer I saw have disappeared????
I saw 16 bucks, and buddy saw 12, that magical day!
And since Ive only seen a couple 2 points and a few does???
The mystery of the muleys continues!

On a positive note, I did find the largest typical shed my eyes have ever seen, a clean 88" 4point shed. Fresh from last year, mint condition! :-D
You guys do the math .
Bigger than my boone buck in my avtar!
That alone will keep me pounding the hills to no end, with high standards next year, unless the wife drops him by tuesday!

You got that right.

What hunters fail to realize is that good hunting areas for big mule deer bucks come and go like the ebb of the tide. (no different than sheep areas).

It can be for a variety of reasons and one thing is very apparent given the postings this year, Region 8 mule deer bucks are doing phenomenal right now and given the rough age class / size of most bucks I am seeing harvested on here, the best is yet to come for monster mule deer bucks.

Region 3 has had its moments.

On a good year, thats the day when hunting gets good, then its over!
The past 2 years have sucked bigtime around here, hence many bucks didnt get killed.
This year we got a huge dump of snow in the high country in late oct., this sent the first wave of migratory deer down to the lowlands, hence some nice bucks have been shot...... thats all!
Its no hayday here, that much I can guarantee!

I noticed a couple conflicting statments though?

You stated in your original thread that:

"It was an hour before dark, and I still had to hike out. I snapped a couple quick pics, did the 3 minute gut job, dragged him 100 yards from the guts into the open, GPS'ed the spot and boggied for the truck by dark."

But when asked about photoshopped edits your reply was

"Actually the first pic is, I blurred out the guts so no-one here rips me a new a-hole "

Kinda looks that way lol- kinda stiff lookin ree gore morteesce

You, the first one to notice, good eye Jel, he was stiff as a c*** the next day. Made for some neat pics, many of which I cant show you guys cuz the scenery had some revealing clues in it.

Maybe he is blowing smokes up our asses. Maybe he does not want people to know where he got it, maybe he shot it from his quad. Who really cares, its an awesome buck. Why does everyone question someones else game or hunt???? Jeeze, guys post stories with out pics they get hammered on. Guys post stories and every internet dectective tries to find holes in the story

I shot a good animal this year and was going to post a pic of it but it would have had the following done to it:

-Black out the face so no one can identify me.
-Black out the animals head so no one can comment on the size/age of animal
- black out all the scenery because it might upset someone that I shot it in "their area"

Basically the pic would have only showed the animals a$$ and thats it. But I decided against it as someone would complain about that too, so it wasn't posted. I know of more then a few animals that were not posted becuase all the a$$ clowns that are critical about every aspect of it.

Detective Redcomet... I was wondering when or if someone was gonna pick up on that.
I did gut it, and drag it about a 100 yards.
The next day when I stood him up a huge glob of jellied blood slid out, and thats actually what was in the background, was just quicker to type guts! No conspiracy folks! :-|
No harm in asking, I would of wondered the same also!

I suppose I could elaborate on my other comment about some pics having revealing clues in it..... Generally when I get a nice animal and start taking pics, I do it with some nice okanagan scenery in the background, many locals could of easily figured out the location.
Then I think of you guys, and take some pics with a few pine trees behind me and people still think they know the exact spot???

I suppose I could elaborate on my other comment about some pics having revealing clues in it..... Generally when I get a nice animal and start taking pics, I do it with some nice okanagan scenery in the background, many locals could of easily figured out the location.
Then I think of you guys, and take some pics with a few pine trees behind me and people still think they know the exact spot???

Hey Buddy

Maybe you could elaborate why you are wearing pyjama bottoms and everyone else is wearing camo pants:mrgreen::mrgreen:
