Whoo hoo.... I've gotten little mulies in the past (in other regions), but I finally got a good one!

This morning, my husband and I were hunting in the White Swan area. We split up to hike seperate areas. I saw lots of older tracks, a doe, and a little 2 point, but nothing legal. We climbed back into the truck and set down a side road. Crap.... we saw another truck just driving out of 'our' road:wink:. We chatted with the couple for a few minutes before continuing on to have a coffee at the turnaround. On our way out, my husband just caught sight of a big buck. I heard "Hon, get out of the truck!........It's legal; shoot it!!!!" I waited a few seconds until I could get a shot. Bam!

Blows me away how I can hike and hike for miles some days and then just get lucky and get one just off the road!?!

Way to go! A fine specimen! Never worry if you see hunters driving out of an area, Many times the hunters driving in will see what the others didn't. My youngest brother got his first buck in the same way, and when he shot, we could still see the other vehicle leaving. Good job!

Yeah.... I'm not super big on mounts (even though we have a couple) but I already started preparing it for a European mount. Nice and simple presentation.

P.S. if anyone has a good plan for getting the meat off the skull easily I'd love to hear it!

She doesn't mention it was below the road what a pig to muscle up the bank only 70 yards but man was it killing my screwed up back. Spent last week on the flat of my back unable to hunt. I figure 220lb live weight mayby more I have killed 25+ deer and this is the heaviest by far. Mayby I have to stop pointing out deer on the down hill side of the road:biggrin:
Have to take a new hunter out this week so it could get worse at least he is a strapping park ranger who can probably pack his own weight.

Gentle boil with some sal soda/washingsoda in the water, you dont want to over boil it. Then pressure wash it to clean. then soak in hydogen peroxide. Oh and congrats on a nice buck.

Thats a nice Buck you got there !

Good on ya, take em when you can from the road, many are not that easy, any one that will pass that one up if you haven't shot much is a fool.

Lots of good eats there,....... I wondered why your called the Grinder Princess.

Tanx for sharing

DO NOT BOIL THE SKULL !!!! it will weaken it .... if any thing a low simmer for longer is better, but not boiling !!

Ha ha ha.....

I went with Grinder Princess because I'm a girl (=princess;)) and we process all our meat ourselves. My husband has a shitty back so I get to do all the grinding with a hand grinder while he cuts the steaks, roasts, etc.

Way to go!It`s funny how things go some days,I`d rather be lucky than good.Hey I have a bunch of electric motors, all you need is the gear box out of a roto-tiller as a reducer and you can power up the hand grinder.I`ll google some plans for you and the motor is free.Congrats.

What it weighed is pure guess we don't have a scale. Could have been over 220lb it sure as hell was a pain to get in the truck.

put the skull in a pot of boiling water and it'll come right off....or just leave it in a bucket of water for a while either work well, boiling will get it off much faster though. Or you could always do the leave it on your lawn in the family neighborhood and watch the birds feast!!!! boiling is the quickest and most effective though!! Good deer though, good job!
