well, after spending most of the season trying to get my 10 year old his first buck,i decided to take a couple days of "me" time.
i loaded the trailer and headed out wed. after work. my plan was to spend thurs. and check out a couple different areas and spend fri. and sat. hunting what ever area looked better.
the first area i went too,i parked and glassed ridges and valleys and seen a few deer but no bucks. around noon,i headed to another area and did the same thing.pretty much the same result. 28 deer and 2 moose between the two areas.with about an hour of legal light left,i decided to start driving out and check out a few clear cuts below where i was(i know i should have stayed till dark but my mind was made up to head back there in the mornin, lol).
one my way out,i drove through a clearing,on my left i seen a deer start running, there was on clump of trees that it ran behind and i didn't see if it was a buck or doe.then another one took off and it was a doe, just then i seen the first one again and seen tall horns, and they were heading across the road in front of me.i jumped out of the truck and waited for him to cross.as he hit the road,i seen four points but wasn't fast enough for a shot.
this is where it gets interesting,lol.....there is 50 yards of clear cut before the trees and the cut is full of little gullies. after he crossed the road,he got in behind a little nole and all i could see was his ears and horns.then about half way to the trees he turns and head straight away from me....now i can see his a$$ and head......nope not going to shoot, lol. then for some strange reason,he cut left a couple steps then back to the right, giving me a quartering away shot. BOOM.....off goes the 180 gr hornady(no comments from you nosler boys, lol). he didn't lose a beat as he hit the trees.there i stood in the middle of the road cursing and swearing that i missed.then the doe follows where the buck went and i seen something move beside where she went into the trees. i didn't know what it was but just shrugged it off. i then drove up to where they had crossed the road and parked. gotta check to see if i did miss or hit him. something every new or experienced hunter should learn too do.as i followed the tracks,i seen a few drops of blood in the snow.i looked up and there he was, laying just inside the trees. when i got up to him,i couldn't believe just how thick his horns were.he isn't wide but the mass and height makes up it.
the pics aren't that great,it was getting dark and the freezing rain was getting cold, lol.i'll try to get a couple more pics that show the mass a little better.

Nice buck VC! The one I got 2 weeks ago was starting to stink and his neck was already swollen.

I went on a planned 5 day solo trip a few years ago, drove all the way to region 5 after work in the dark, walked 20 minutes from the camper on the first morning and shot a nice 4 point. Home by 2 pm on day one. Sometimes the planets align just right!
