I will stay right here on the coast. Huge bear population and I can go hunting 10min from the house.8-)

Although a trip would be fun.

70 some more days to go down south maybe. Last year I didn't see any bears for the first 2 weeks of the season. That is also because I had to hunt in 7-16 which is north of Prince George. After the dandelions started coming up it was awesome, it was no problem to see 10 bears a day driving or walking. Also I only ran into two other hunters from april till june.

The biggest bear I've seen to date was seen last year April 7th. So on the Island you'll start seeing them before they do on the mainland usually.

We tried to organize a bear hunt last spring. There were four that showed up. We can give it a go again if there's interest. Lots of bears around. Though with all the rain we've been having, maybe they all drowned in their dens.

there is a pic of a 6 footer dragginbait and I got last may in cowichan but Ive seen bigger up there. saw 1 that took up an old growth stump 6-7 feet across while it was napping in the sun. To far from the road while I was by my self would have been an easy shot , got him on video though. going to look this spring for him again.

A dozen years ago I shot a 6 footer at Kissinger Lake in behind Lake Cowichan. We were camped there for my cousins stag, I just finished breakfast and told the other guys I was going to go get my bear and walked out to the main road and it was right along the side of the road. It was scarred up pretty good, probably by the bigger one that we seen driving in the night before.

There are a couple places I might go check out. The island or stick close to home. I haven't really decided yet. I don't care for the bear meat that much or maybe I had a crappy butcher. In any case I'd like to try it once more! and take care of the butchering myself.
Nice to see the countdown thread, always good to keep an out of season hunter going

I'll be heading up into the Skeena for bear this spring, probably the end of May. Will it be just black bear or will it be for both blacks and griz. We'll find out soon enough.

It's easier for me to head north to the Skeena from the Cariboo and there no BS with the ferry. Personally, I don't really think the bears on the island have anything on the brutes up there. More huntable country too.

Well the bears on the Island are only black because they are probably one of the purest subspecies of bears on the planet. The Island bears are also geneticly superior when it comes to big noggins. So you can have your color phase bears it just means I get to keep the biggins to myself:biggrin:

Can't wait for April 1st. Seems so far away right now. Hubby has agreed to be back-up for me when I go for a bear with my crossbow. HE HATES THEM STINKERS but he does like to eat them.
