I resent that assumption. :???:

I'll have you know I caught it fair and square, and the ones I foul-hooked I sent them back on their merry way.

Mine will be for the smoker...I prefer not to take chum home neither...but like i said i had pretty much killed it fighting it and weighin it....soooo i cant kill it and leave it there...it'll either see a smoker...or the end of my line for sturgeon :)

Streptococcal (Strep) diseases of fish are not
common; however, when they do occur, significant
mortality can result. Some aquatic Strep species may
cause disease in humans in unusual circumstances.
However, these latter species do not usually affect
healthy people.

Streptococcal disease in fish was first reported in
1957, affecting cultured rainbow trout. Since then, numerous other
species of fish have been found susceptible to
infection, including salmon, mullet, golden shiner,
pinfish, eel, sea trout, tilapia, sturgeon, and striped
bass

This thread is why we should have a fisheries education course before one can buy a fishing license. Those are spawning fish, taken from redd sites. Just because they bite, doesn't mean it's 'OK'. Those chum have the food value of a week old dog turd. Leave them alone. Disgusting.

FWIW, I gave it away to a family friend who's gonna make it food for their cats, so nothing's gone to waste :D

OMG! those things are disgusting when they're all spawned out like that. I dont even like it when they bounce off the outside of my waders. the thought never even crossed my mind to maybe keep one and actually eat it eeeeeuuuuwwwww!!

my brothers golden lab loves to roll in the dead ones on the bank though. what a pleasant ride home it is with her.

thats where you are wrong,,the fish in the lower end of the Stave River have the appearance of spawned out, but lots are not. They turn real quick when in the Fraser. If you have ever been on the gill netters there is tons that are caught that look just like the one RP kept.
personally i would not keep them but they are fun to catch in the lower end with spoons, they are for me a by- catch when spoon fishing for coho, although i have kept quite a few over the years that are silvery gold that were the does, they were still a by-catch.

that fish RP caught is not spawned out .. look at him .. he has all his fins and all tail .. no bruises or missing flesh ..he probably has been hanging out out in front of the light ship for a few weeks .. waiting for the right scent in the water .. .. fresh water does that to all species of salmon
i have bought fish in front of qualicum that look just like it .. gum boots we called them ..lol .. ugly .. in a nice kinda way ... been a while since i ran a packer but we regularly bought fish on the Fraser that looked like that .. smokes good ..

YOU GO RP !!!!!!

Right on! A fish that could have spawned to create more fish has become CAT FOOD. What a great use for a valuable PUBLIC RESOURCE.

We had chum in hot-pot last week and some liked it, some didn't. To each their own I guess. By now you should know this Chinese guy eats everything

3rd times a charm I guess

Legally maybe..ethicly no.Cat food what a waste..Should have let that fish do its thing..Spawn and die..They are a valuble in life as in death.Corpses add much needed nutrients to the river system..This whole idea of "They're only chum" will be our demise, cause they were only Sockeye and Steelhead..Look at the numbers now.Tight lines Beaks

Hearing you there. But killing that Chum 3 weeks ago; chrome in the chuck, would equal the same dead fish.

One would hope that a the rules would sort out the best thing for the fish. And moreover the spawning grounds. I don't think that's the case all the time.

Just chuck'n shit out there for the conversation ->

it really has nothing to do with if it is legal or not? i think what a lot of people are saying is that if they were to catch that fish they would choose to release it. its a forum.......i think a lot of the info posted on this site are either "educated opinions" and or "hands on experiences" and that is why i frequent here. i hope that it stays that way.

The difference here, is that three weeks ago in the salt, the fish would have had some actual food value, and wouldn't have been fed to a goddamn cat!

Wasting the fish you catch is illegal. I am 100% certain that giving a sportsfish to a cat is wasting the fish you catch!!!!!!!!
