View Full Version : Lesson Learned

Was hunting across a ridge yesterday that is a perfect bedding ground for big bucks. Sub alpine, small knolls, boulders, intermittent low timber, out of the wind. I had seen sign and I was walking into the wind, taking my time. I hadn't seen anything and I was almost to the end and I got careless as I was thinking about crossing over to the next valley. As I came around a tree with my head down:mad: I heard the tell tale bounce of a heavy mule deer. He was bedded about 50 yards away slightly uphill and he caught me. I got my crosshairs on him for a split second, hoping he would stop or turn but he lit out like his tail was on fire. Lesson learned.
I think this is him.

Both of those bucks are nice! I often find myself not paying attention/daydreaming while hunting - sooner or later it will probably catch me too:-o

I got a funny feeling you'll probably be heading back to that area.

Hunting uphill in the thick stuff, I hate it when that happens. May be accompanyed by a snort ..........or not.
But I bet you will have a better tale in a day or two.

Went back to try and find him yesterday. Finally saw him at last light, too far away, too late for a stalk and too late for a picture. I did see some other bucks though, everybody's got thick necks. All of the bucks seem to be pretty fat. All the bigger bucks were right at tree line, still not much movement through the middle of the day.

Got 120 Yards from this guy but I just couldn't pull the trigger knowing what's there

This buck is actually a 6x4, he's got a little point in his back fork on the right and an extra tine in his front fork
