My dad and I got skunked duck hunting yesterday in the rain, so we tried to do a goose hunt today. Since we have a ton of geese in our freezer, my dad we said we should only get a max of 3 since there is barely any room in the freezer! I was able to change that number to 3 EACH with some convincing to my dad.
The goal was to be picky and only shoot nice lessers (those old greaters are like chewing on a boot! We wanted more tender geese.)
We were all set up and ready to go 30 minutes prior to time. The plan was one of us sits in the goose spread and one goes to the mallard pond until 3 geese were on the ground, then we'd switch.
Dad started off in the goose spread and I was waiting for some mallards (no luck on mallards). By 7:45, 4 geese enter the field. The geese had a real funny honk?? BOOM, BOOM, BOOM. Dad shot 2 Cacklers! First we've ever shot! 15 minutes later dad pounds a nice lesser. (He says he landed like 4 flocks of giants in the deeks before some lessers showed up)
My turn! We switch and now dad's waiting for mallards (no such luck) and I am in the goose spread. I let lots of greaters go by before a huge flock of lessers come. I called them right into 15 yards. (Highlight of the day)= TOOK 1 SHOT AND 3 FALL!!!!!!!!:shock::shock::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:
Theres our 6.
When we were packing up a flock of lessers come over. I am content with our made 'limit'. My dad on the other hand, he was struggling! He couldn't help it but shoot 1 more.
So 7 it is (gotta find a way to fit them in the freezer). Our largest goose is only about 7-8 lbs.
Can't believe how small those cacklers are!! Just a tad larger than a mallard.
