I heard about this light weight electric fence, but have never seen one.

I know beekeepers use a similar setup, but this one supposidly in for hunters/campers. Anyone here familiar with this type of "bear control"??

I have one but havnt had a chance to use it yet.Apparently they are very popular in Alaska in heavy brown bear habitat. It is a small package and would be a better option than carrying a handgun imho. This is the whole kit , poles , charger and wire.

Will you get a shock if you pee on that device in the dark of the night?

Why would you be holding your buddies hand at night in camp?

so after youve given the bear a few shocks....pissed it off.....is it gonna take it out on the fence or the tastie humans in the centre?

I haven't used mine yet but I bought a portable electric fence system in Bellingham at a hardware store this fall.

Gallagher Porta Fence B 11 $113.00
- effective range of 1km or 0.6 miles of multiwire fencing
- 4 battery settings including D cells good for 6 months or connect to 12 volt battery or ...

6 poles to hold 4 strands of wire: $2.50 each

250' of Aluminum wire (supposed to be the best conductor): $10.00

Total cost: approx $140

My 300 Browning Win Mag still offers better protection but this may (emphasis on may) give me a better sleep in a tent in bear country.

Havnt heard or read of any bears that breached the fence or that came back to give it a second try.Would give a guy some time to get out of the tent with his firearm anyhow.

Especially with your pants unzipped!!!!!!!!!!!

The fencer may discourage a curious bear but certainly not a charging one IMHO.

You're holding your buddys hand to pass him the current while your pissing on the fence , there is a risk a guy could end up with a barbecued wiener as well.I think in most cases bears come in slow and quietly and that is when the fence would be effective.

My neighbour has a full blown, wired to hydro, electric fence around his garden/fruit trees. Here is what he witnessed from a bear, interested in the ripe fruit on the trees:
1. The bear approaches
2. The bear gets shocked when it comes in contact with the fence
3. The bear jumps back in suprise
4. The bear sits there for 10 seconds contemplating
5. The bear takes a run at the fence and flies right through the fence, in the process destroying it.
6. The bear has its prize (until he went out and shooed it away).

Smart bear,of course a guy could up the charge but than he would probably come back with pole vaults, lol.

Or the rubber boots he got from the last campers he ate.

Can't really see this kind of setup working very well.
I fence my dogs and horses in with an electric fence setup and you have to train the dogs to respect the fence or they pass right through a 5 wire fence easily. With the amount of hair a bear has you really would need some ideal conditions to shock him on the way through. A wire sliding along on his back hair as he passes through likely won't do it.
If by chance he put his wet nose on it though he'd get educated real quick.

Been more way more grizz in our hunting area of late. Been looking at the doit yourself setups that they have at Princess Auto. Like yours they can be had for a very reasonable price. Just not all set up in a pretty package.
