Hunting near Vanderhoof with a buddy and our sons for two weeks. On Oct 9 he was out on the lake scouting the shore line with his boy. I got a late start for the evening hunt as my lad got a migraine. In the end I decided to let him rest and headed off in the truck for a spot of local grouse hunting instead. Less than two clicks from our camp I came around the corner in my truck and there's a black (well, chocolate) bear heading into the left bush line. By the time I'd reacted and braked, I was just past him. I opened my door, and stepped out with the rifle, chambering a round as I did so. As I brought up the gun, he walked another six feet or so into the bush, but I stll had clear sight of his vitals at about 20 feet. When I shot, he made it about 30m into the bush and plowed in. He was a heavy sucker, even after I'd gutted him. It took one of us on each leg to get him out of that deadfall. We figured around 275-300 pounds. Not a very big guy, but I was quite happy with him.

Anyway, I'll take him over grouse any day. It's black bear maple sausage for Sunday breakfast.

Data:

Gun: CZ 550 Full Stock (20.5" barrel) topped with a Nikon 2-7 Prostaff
Ammo: Sierra Pro Hunter 220 gr RN backed by 34 gr of H4895 out of Lapua Brass with CCI primers.

FYI, with this gun/load, I was able to get a sub MOA group of three rounds at 100m (not that it mattered at 20 feet!). I think I've found my bush gun!

Congratulations on your first bear. He looks great. Enjoy the black bear maple sausages you deserve them.:-)

Sorry about your lad having a migraine. Best you could do let him rest. I know what it feels like to have migraine, I am just over my weekly migraine attack that lasted two days and one night. Longest attack I had for a year or so

Superb gun. Highly recommended.

I searched up and down the country for threee months for it and finally found one at Frontier taxidermy in SK. Those guys are all about customer service. They did a very nice job of getting that gun to me.
