This past week myself and my two adult hunting buddies, (ie not the kid!!!)
were out in 3-20 for our annual hunt. Early Monday morning in a cut block, I bumped a moose out of a grove of small poplars. For all the world my initial ID was a full grown cow. It ran some 50 yds while I held the bino's on it. Just as it headed into the trees, HE!! lifted his head and all I saw was a single 6" long, dead straight spike. By the time I dropped the bino's and shouldered the rifle, he was gone :frown:

Has anyone else seen weird antlers on moose like this. Could it have been an old bull that just regressed to what I saw?

I know the intent of the "spike fork" regs, but this boy was legal as per the "no more than 2 points" rule. Someone is going to get lots of steaks out of him, just wish I'd been faster. ;-)

He was either injured from last year by a hunter or some other tragedy.
It is common to see poor antler growth on animals that have been wounded from the previous year.

What you saw was a unicorn:lol:, lay off the caffeen. I would bet it was an immy with a broken tine.

Not wierd IMHO. There are spikes out there for sure as well as 2 points. It can be tough to judge the size of the animal when they are on there own as well, maybe he was only a year old and a legal immy? or was the spike a heavy thick 6"?? Did it have 2 spikes? Did it have a big body with "schwartsnegger" type front legs?

Don't ever pass up a big bull that makes spike/fork regs! I shot a 2x5 that was 38" wide, 4 1/2 years old. It had an old bullet wound in its opposite shoulder which likely contributed to its deformity.

I wouldn't worry about the "intent" of the regs - mature gimps that make spike/fork are no different than the 2 1/2 year old mule deer or elk that make the 4 or 6 point regs - there's no hesitation on the regulations' "intent" in those cases! Shoooooooooooooot!

So what was the oddity ? Large body for a yearling ? As said, tough to judge. Good genes ?

Just the shear size and yet such a unusual rack got me. We saw lots of moose this week and I know a big one when I see it. 10 more seconds and I'd have had some packing to do!!

He caused us to go back later that day and try find him, we never did, but my buddy got his first mulie as a bonus for our efforts!

The private museum in Fort Nelson have skull of a COW moose, which have only one, weird looking antler.

A local hunter mistook it for a young bull moose and shot it.

Killed by a friend of mine in 3.20 on October 9 (IIRC). He said he thought it was a big cow for a long time until it turned just the right way and he noticed the single spike! PM me with road info if you like - it would be interesting to know how close it was to where you saw yours.

Got my smallest bull moose ever couple years back in reg 3.

9 inch spikes, thought it was a calf by body size, there, sure enough, bone movement above the head ..... BOOM !

Like eating veal !

Yum Yum !

Mom was next to the remains the next day.

Yep...I thought it could have been a regressed too. Like Mike said, he was just over 400lns on the hook skinned out.

I also shot one with weird antlers in Region 7. Pretty sure it was an immature as it only weighed 308lbs at the butcher, but it was a 1X1 with both antlers sticking almost straight up.

a friend of mine took an immy last week in region 8-9. It had one 12" spike and the other side was just a nub. Young bulls often break off antlers while they are in velvet. Thus the "unicorn" status. I woulda dropped the sucker too!
