The day I left for archery elk season was on the morning of Aug 27 2009.
I got to my hunting spot on that evening and slept in the front of my truck that night ,the next morning I set up camp then headed out scouting ,saw a huge 6x6 with 6 cows and as for a smaller bull that the big guy put the run on him.
I continued to scout out the next few days of Aug seeing a few more bulls as for cows and calf's.
On Aug 29 Mike Mekita and his friend Rob met me at Moey store at 12noon we headed out to the the area whee Mike got his archery spike bull last year ,we spent two days scouting this area out and only seen one cow elk http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon13.gif.

On opening morning of archery we saw a big fat O for elk that opening day ,the temp was +33c http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon9.gif.
I talked to mike and Rob about heading over to my area so he made camp at my homestead.
The next morning i told mike that we should head down to an area where I always see bull elk so we did ,we parked the truck a short distance from where we where going to go ,as we approached the area we spoked a herd of elk ,one being a nice 5x5 bull elk ,Mike put the range finder on it was 57 yards he the notched his arrow and let fly he had a good hit behind the shoulders hours latter we retrieved him and got the elk back to camp.

http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/373.jpg (http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/showphoto.php?photo=18048&limit=recent)

Mike and Rob left the next day the third of Sept in order to get the meat home before it spoiled .I was by myself once again.
I got up the next morning at 4am and got to an area that I saw elk a few days earlier it payed off I called in a 6x5 bull but it hung up out at 68 yards ,I tried to get him into range but no luck he left as fast as he came in.

The next day I went back to the same place and called in a 4x5 bull it to hung up out at 57 yards to far for my cross bow my max range is 40 yards ,he to left after a short time.
If I only had a caller to play the buddy system I think I could have arrowed one of them bulls that I had called in.

The season for bow was gone as fast as it had come now it was time to get the 7mm mag out of the gun case and try to find a 6 point bull.

The first few days of rifle season had gone by and I only saw a few cows no bulls.
On Sept 13 my friend Scott that is Trigger on the forum showed up and I had a excellent hunting partner to hunt elk in the hills.

Me and Scott whet up into a remote area about 3kl back and found a huge bull it was a 7x7 I had seen him 2 times and so had Scott.
Scott called him dragon because of his calling the elk sounded like a dragon.

Me and Scott waked into this area with our head lamps on first thing every morning for a week also did the same thing at night coming out with the lights on.
Scott seen this bull out at 500 yards and had his safety off but could not get a clear enough shot as for a good rest so he declined on the shot ,good on him for passing on the shot.

Scott brought his dog trigger on his hunt I was very happy to have trigger in my camp for the second year.

http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/471.jpg (http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/showphoto.php?photo=18050)

One night Scott was set up about 300 yards from me and he had dragon coming out of the timber ,the cows were already out and dragon was just back in the timber a short distance he was calling back to another bull.

Then two shots rang out and I thought that Scott had nailed his bull of a life time but it was not to be ,Scott called me on my radio and said you better come up here as I approached him he pointed his finger to wards a hunter and said it was him that fired the two shots he had shot a cow elk.
We reported this the the CO the CO came into our camp and Scott took the CO to the camp of the poacher ,he confessed that he had shot the cow elk and the poacher was nailed in big fines from James Barber the CO from Creston.
The next few days Scott and me we worked the same area and there where no elk to be found what a bummer.

Scott left to head home after the 14 days had gone by with no elk ,to bad Scott ,there will be another year to fill your tag ,we both worked hard at trying to get dragon but came up short handed.

After Scott left I got into a few more bulls all being 5x5 I will be putting the video tapping of the bulls onto utube and will post the link on this thread latter in the week.

My X brother in law shot this fine 5x5 white tail deer and my other hunting partner shoot a nice 2x2 white tail deer as well.
The 2x2 that Boash had shot was skinned and hanging from a meat pole it was up about 12 feet to the lowest part of the deer.
One night a big boar Grizzly came in to try and take this deer it was around midnight the Griz woke me up when it was screaming its head off being mad he could not get at the meat reason being it was hi up in the pole ,the Griz did get some of the neck and front shoulder meat before I shot over its head at about 40 feet away ,I saw this big black figure take off into the night.

We where up till 2am dealing with this problem the next day we built a 20 foot ladder and put a new meat pole up at the 25 foot off the ground and further from our camp.
When we where dealing with this bear that night I was standing guard with the defender light on at the end of the 12 gage shotgun and my head lamp on when all of a sudden this bear came back to claim the deer all I saw was its light up eyes and I took a shot over its head and it turned and disappeared into the dark of the night.
http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/medium/leaf_312.jpg (http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/showphoto.php?photo=15736&size=big&cat=500)

In the next few days that went by then date had come that I could use my WT doe tag I saw does but was holding out for a buck ,I saw this nice spike WT buck so I nailed him about 50 yards from the road ,got it back to camp and skinned and hung it up to dry.

I saw a total of around 30 bull elk and around 300 cow and calf elk on my 7 week hunt.
I met this old timer 3 years ago in where I hunt his name is Arky he is polish at the age of 86 he still has it all.
He was about 4kl from me where he had his camp set up he was staying in a small tent with no heat ,good on him I respect this man to no end for what he can still do at this age.

One morning I went to check on him as I usually do each day and he said to me that he is finding it hard to find a doe WT deer to shoot so I said to him I will take you out in my truck this evening and find you a doe he was very happy I was doing this for him.
I picked him up at 4pm that evening we only drove for about 2kl when I spotted 2 dry does in the slash ,I pointed them out to him he got out of the truck loaded his 270. and let fly with his bullet ,it found its mark in the boiler room a 150 yards out ,what a shot he maid ,he could not stop thanking for what I did for him ,he had a few tears that rolled down from his eyes he was so happy.

http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/medium/leaf_405.jpg (http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/showphoto.php?photo=15737&size=big&cat=500)

One days had gone by and Arky came into my camp and said he was leaving to go home to Vancouver after being in the bush for 25 days.

I said I will come down that evening to say fair well to you I got there around 4pm and he was almost packed up and ready to leave we talked for about 20min and then all of a sudden I hear a full note bugle from up on the ridge above his camp ,I quickly grabbed my 7mm and binoculars from out of my truck and headed up the ridge running I got up about 200 yards and I saw this big set of antlers that this bull was caring soon as we saw each other he took off like a bullet would fly ,i put the 10x42 Leupold's on his antlers to count 6 points on top I dropped the binoculars raised the gun and let fly he hit the ground like a rock the shot was at about 100 yards ,man was I pumped when he hit the ground.

http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/1311.jpg (http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/showphoto.php?photo=18059)

http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/leaf_421.jpg (http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/showphoto.php?photo=15742)

I cleared a road up to where the elk was it took me 2hr to get a road cleared in order to get my truck up to the elk.
After I had the road clear enough to get the truck to the elk ,I had cleaned the elk before clearing the path to get to the elk what a job I had to do in the dark to clear a road way.
After I got the elk down to the landing I skinned it and sectioned it up when all was done it was 12.30 am.

http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/data/500/1422.jpg (http://www.huntingbc.ca/photos/showphoto.php?photo=18060)

The next day it was time to get out of dodge city I took camp down with one eye going around 360 degress at all times.
Here is a pic of that Griz foot print.

I bet, after you got that oldtimer his doe, it didn't matter as much to you if you got your bull or not... I am a very firm believer in karma, and your experience is a prime example! Congradulations on an exellent bull and sticking it out as long as you did.

I was looking for those pics this morning, your story got me so pumped.
I wish I was there to help and hunt. Next year.
Nice bull Wayner!
Your persistance is the reason for your success each year, not many guys have more determination than you.
Lots of guys lose enthusiasm towards the last half of the hunt, like I say, its never over til you hit the pavement.
Good to see Arky in there again, I hope he's there next year. He's an interesting guy. Did he have his home made sticks he assembles to drag that deer out ?

Congrats on the hunt.

This bull that I got is an old bull ,how you can tell is by looking at the size of it ivories.

The smaller the ivories are the older the bull is ,I compared the ivories from Mike bull to the one I got ,the one Mike got are a third larger then the ones from the elk I got.
I will post a pic from the two different animal ivories latter today.

Here is the pic of the ivories from the two bulls we got this year in the EK.
The top ivory is from the bull that Mike shot with his bow,the bottom ivory is from the bull I shot.
When the Ivories are small in size then you have an older bull thats how you can tell.

You know what Wayne you truly deserve this elk and more. Many other hunters would and did quit/leave their hunt because of time/work constraints but I wonder how many would actually stay out in the bush that long if they had the opportunity. People see the pics and say wow, awesome hunt, good for you but what is not up there to see is the frustrating times, the tired times from hiking miles and going on no sleep, the perseverance of hunting when there is no hope and no energy. You kept going strong for a long time and worked very hard. Congrats to the best elk hunter I can think of!

I totally agree with your thread, when I arrived in to hunt with Wayne he was physically and mentally exhausted after 5 weeks of hunting allready but still pushed me to get my ass in gear to try and get a bull, he had me up every morning at 4:30 AM by delivering me a hot cup of coffee to me , allready dressed with the truck running to go to our planned hunt that day. He stuck with it, never quitting, always trying to figure out the pattern's of the herds and planning our next hunt. Although we did not connect while I was there, we did see lots of game and called a beautiful 5X5 right up a draw to us which to me was all worth my trip. I truly have never met anyone as devoted to hunting, filming wildlife, and basically born to be in the outdoors as much as 47. Jim Shockey...look out dude:smile:

Thanks for taking the time to write it up Wayne! And congratulations on your success, from one elk hunting lover to another!

You certainly have what it takes, and you earned that bull. And good on you for taking a senior hunter out as well.
The feel-good story of the season!

Finally got to reading this one, and it was well worth the read. Congrats Wayne on a great hunt. You certainly lead by example as an experienced Hunter and If I ever bump into another Hunter in my secret "spots" I hope they are a lot like yourself a decent person. We need more like you out there. I have been lucky enough to meet a few in my "spots" and have expanded my hunting buddy circle but that circle of quality people can never be too big.
Cheers to your Trip :-)

Thanks for posting a great story and pics. Congrats on your deer & elk. Taking the time to help out an aged member of our hunting fraternity provided the karma that brought that bull to you. Very well deserved!

M.Dean I have always hunted hard on most hunts ,I really have to keep up on the conditioning at my age in order to get up them mountains ,I will keep going till I drop and if I drop dead in the mountains with a hart attack that is where I would love to end my life ,no better place then in nature.
