After a couple of wonderful days in 8-01, I managed to cut my doe tag and bag a couple of grouse while doing so....not to mention to become the first hunter in my family.
Spotted three does during the trip, the first one I stalked into the thick stuff and eventually lost sight and track of where she went. Bumped into the second one also in the thickets, but by the time I could raise my rifle, she flagged her tail and screamed out something that sounded like "run for your lives." I spotted the third and final doe at about 100 yards, and just when she was starting to sense something and trot, a whistle stopped her in her tracks and I managed to squeeze off a shot, hitting her at a slight angle right behind the shoulder. She ran about 30 yards and dropped.
I was using my Brno ZKK-600...It turns out a .30-06 armed with 180 grain Winchester Silvertips is more than enough for game of this size. The bullet made a pass through taking out a rib on both the near and far side. Overall, the experience has been very positive and more than I expected... now can't wait to cut my Mulley tag as well. Saw a CO pass by, but I guess a Honda Civic doesn't draw too much serious attention.... 8)
It took 35min to field dress, another 30min to get the hide off while on the tarp, and 4 hours at home to butcher and vacuum pack the good stuff. Just made venison stew in the slow cooker... "OMG, it's sooo good....it's sooo tender" is what my wife said after her first taste (she got seconds).... :-P
I can't give enough thanks to the HuntingBC community. There is truly a wealth of knowledge here and some really kind people who are willing to help others become better outdoorsmen. Thanks to all...
