View Full Version : First Hunting Season Success

After a couple of wonderful days in 8-01, I managed to cut my doe tag and bag a couple of grouse while doing so....not to mention to become the first hunter in my family.

Spotted three does during the trip, the first one I stalked into the thick stuff and eventually lost sight and track of where she went. Bumped into the second one also in the thickets, but by the time I could raise my rifle, she flagged her tail and screamed out something that sounded like "run for your lives." I spotted the third and final doe at about 100 yards, and just when she was starting to sense something and trot, a whistle stopped her in her tracks and I managed to squeeze off a shot, hitting her at a slight angle right behind the shoulder. She ran about 30 yards and dropped.

I was using my Brno ZKK-600...It turns out a .30-06 armed with 180 grain Winchester Silvertips is more than enough for game of this size. The bullet made a pass through taking out a rib on both the near and far side. Overall, the experience has been very positive and more than I expected... now can't wait to cut my Mulley tag as well. Saw a CO pass by, but I guess a Honda Civic doesn't draw too much serious attention.... 8)

It took 35min to field dress, another 30min to get the hide off while on the tarp, and 4 hours at home to butcher and vacuum pack the good stuff. Just made venison stew in the slow cooker... "OMG, it's sooo good....it's sooo tender" is what my wife said after her first taste (she got seconds).... :-P

I can't give enough thanks to the HuntingBC community. There is truly a wealth of knowledge here and some really kind people who are willing to help others become better outdoorsmen. Thanks to all...

Here are the pics...

Hi there nice pic's,where did you get that rib speader?
It's the Outdoor Edge Steel Stick (http://www.outdooredge.com/product_detail.php?cat_ID=5&prod_ID=9)... got it off eBay for $12....so simple but very very impressive! This was an addition to the SwingBlade Pak (http://www.outdooredge.com/product_detail.php?cat_ID=3&prod_ID=45) I got, which made the initial incisions as easy as opening a zipper. Can't say enough good things about these products....will see how they hold up over time.

Congrats!!

I can imagine it's not easy becoming the first hunter in your family.

We all can't start off as experts so it's nice to see a tale of a hunter's first success.

As stated above, well presented!

Hope you enjoy the long journey that you just began:smile:.

Well, I guess now there's an addendum to my season...I just wish I didn't forget to pack my camera....

Went on my first solo hunt in 3-15, and as luck would have it, I actually bumped into something. After a nice hike, I found this guy on a ledge bedded down with his girlfriend at 30m away. Took a shot through the branches and had the bullet zip right through both lungs. Took 4 steps and he was out.

Had to drag his butt 4.2km back to my car in pissing rain with a gang of ravens following me like vultures. Today my shins, shoulders, and back are paying the price for it.... But it's my first buck, and it was totally worth it! Man I'm so glad I started hunting!

Congratulations. I like how you field process and keep everything clean. That's the way it is done. The sternum spreader is a good idea, makes eviscerating the chest cavity easy.

Congratulations on your "first hunter" status, great pic's and a fine presentation with the grouse sequence and deer stew ingredients. I have to agree with your wife, venison stew is "to die for", just had a great bunch of it last night and it gets better each day with the left overs.

Again, congratulations and great job on the successful hunt!

Congrats on the deer, glad to see more hunters out there. Nice presentation.

I use a BRNO 06 too, nice rifle, shoots great. I find 165 grain is more than enough for even a big buck and 180 grain will drop a moose easy enough.

awesome job! I use the same rib spreaders. They work awesome. They came as part of a pkg when I bought the outdoor edge processing kit. never leave on a trip with out it.
