Hey y'all

we are heading to the cabin this weekend for our Thanksgiving celebration and combined hunting trip. We have Peter's cousin, Cille still with us so this will be her introduction into the BC wilderness. She can't wait to go fishing again and learn to shoot my rifle

if anyone is in the area of the north side of Canim Lake towards Boss creek, come say hello :) we are region 5-1 but right across the road it switches to 5-2

Have a very very eventful and happy thanksgiving everyone

Enjoy your trip and getting away from the zoo of the big city for a bit....

Weather has changed so hunting should be decent...Have noticed that the whitey bucks are starting to follow the does around in the rural parcels of land on the south side of Cranbrook...Not full rut yet, but getting some movement...

Sit back, relax, let your hair down and have a blast....

Post pics when you return too...

We got ourselves all packed and on the road, got into the cabin about 9 pm friday evening (we left a day later due to hockey committments) - temperature change from 16 degrees at home to -9 degrees at the cabin. Thank goodness for wood stoves and stocked up firewood.

Azshia and Josh showed up about 1 hour behind us. Was nice to have everyone there safe and sound. Cille was in awe of the trees and the lake and just the landscape we have in BC. It was fun having someone with such a new enthusiasm travelling up there.

Saturday morning we had a huge breakfast and decided it would be a great time to try some grouse hunting and if we happen to see a nice 4 point buck or a thick coated black bear would be a bonus. I was excited to finally get a chance to try out my savage .22/410 over under Peter gave me for my birthday. I hadn't fired it yet. We head out with 5 kids packed into the truck, sandwiched with rifles around us. Azshia, Peter and I are the only ones with licenses but the others came for the fun as well as we went to our place for sighting in rifles and did some target shooting.

Josh had never fired a rifle before in his life, so instructions from Azshia came to him and some coaching from Peter. He did really well with the .22 but then he wanted to try the big guns. He saw Azshia fire off a shot from her rifle (.308 ) and decided to give it a try. He hit that target dead center. A natural. He is stoked now to get his pal and core. Breanne is a little more nervous with the rifles but she loves the .22. She took her turn and did well hitting the target each time just a little low of center. Azshia has always been a dead on shot with the .22 and since taking her moose in one shot last year well I can be a proud mommy and say that girl should go into competition. Braydon is now finally mature enough to respect the rifles (no more immature silliness). He loves Peter's .270 and teases me about mine. HA - I shot one off and the kid was like holy mother of well you know how 17 year olds talk. He decides to give my little BSA270 a try and said it was smoother than his dad's. Peter of course had to show the kids how his new Browning wsm300 xbolt sounds and shoots but of course none of us were allowed to try it. Me I ahd a blast with my little savage. Then it cam time to Cille (Peter's cousin - staying with us from Denmark). She has never fired a rifle but she has fired a handgun in some military training. She started with the .22 and had a little trouble at first but the great coach Peter is had her hitting the target right on. She was shy of the larger rifles so just stuck with the .22. After about an hour of teaching the non-shooters gun saftey and how to shoot we decided it was grouse time.

Let's just say them critters weren't co-operating. We didn't get a one (dang good thing I brought up a turkey). As we headed up another of the familiar FSR's we frequent, we ran into a truck with 4 guys in it all fully dressed in stylin gear and bright bright orange vests, towing 3 quads behind them and then another small car with another 4 hunters dressed the same way. Very mysterious not too talkative, we think one was a guide. Apparently they shot up all the grouse cause they had a wack load of them (sigh). They sure were dressed brightly. Peter figured they may be Americans because of the orange. So no grouse but a lot of new scenery and many new roads have been made and needing some scouting.

Back to the cabin for food and drinks and laughter. Sunday being the day we are having our turkey, I am up ealrier than everyone to start the prep work. Takes a lot to get that wood stove to the right temp for cooking, heat is easy, cooking is a challenge. My Mom and her boyfreind are driving down from 108 Mile to join us for dinner and we invited one of the other lease cabiners as well, so it was a full house. NoahDawg was supposed to try and come down but he had work committments. Yeah right, he was moose hunting with moosinaround, Brett and his brother, lol. Anyways, I am on dinner duty all day and Peter took Breanne and Cille fishing while Azshia, Josh and Braydon took the quad and dirtbike exploring the new roads. Azshia took the .22 as well hoping for some grouse on their adventure.

It's all quiet in the cabin for me, just me and my poochies and this big honking bird. As I set up things for the dining area, Cille comes running in from the boat and says she caught a fish and it was this big (you know how fishermen lie) she says but it got away. Well we taught her well, she knows how to tell a fishtale. Of course by then people are arriving and settling in with wine, beer and everything else we had, talking and telling tales of past times up at Cedar Creek. You see the property our cabin is on has been owned by the Reid family for 60 years so there is a lot of history to tell for newcomers. Guess thats another project in the making to tell the story of Cedar Creek. We had a beautiful dinner.

Monday, Azshia and Josh had to leave to go home. Peter and I left early in the morning to do some hunting, letting the kids sleep in. Again the little grouse were being very evasive and shy but then finally I spot one and out of the truck I go slowly and quietly as to not spook it. I load my Savage with a .410 shell and aim and boom, it was doing a funny little dance on the ground. Ha I did it, first time by myself, no coaching. and that was the only one we got. I told Peter it was time he did his part in this as I was getting tired of having to supply him with meat. You men are so sensitive. We didnt see any other critters the entire time. So no deer, no bear.

Tueday morning it is up and atom and pack and clean and high tail it out as we have to be back home and into Vancouver for Braydon's hockey game. Wouldn't ya know it just as we pull out onto the FSR by the cabin a big beautiful black bear is sitting in the middle of the road. I said to Peter come on 15 minutes and we will have a bear. He said no time and the bear bolted and off we went (grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr flippin hockey). This bear was well over 5' and so fat and so fluffy, his fur was so black it shon blue but he will be there next year. We decided to take a detour and check out our property and as we were driving up the road to it, out pops a gorgeous whitetail doe. She just stood there looking at us. Cille was again in awe as she has never seen a bear in the wild or been that close to a deer.

Off home, now it wasn't so much a hunting trip as we didn't get to do much hunting per say, but I have to say our Thanksgiving gave us something more, we were able to show and teach 2 people who have never had the chance in their lives to experience the outdoors and wilderness, we showed them you don't need all that technology to be imaginitive and have life experiences and we were thankful for being able to share our good fortune with others year.

Hope y'all had great Thanksgivings as well.

pics will come after they finish downloading.
