My wife and I were out early trying to find that elusive immature this morning. We had set up in a block and I was doing my best imitation of a cow. We heard what we were sure was a cow call way off in the distance about 10 minutes after I had called- certainly not a response to mine, just coincidental. After a half hour or so we decided to try somewhere else and started to head out. We were moving along the road where there was a large flat cutblock on our left when I spotted something black in the middle of the block. I stopped and had a look and saw 3 more objects in close proximity to the first one. Bears? Wolves! 6 of the *******s and all black. I got out of the truck and let fly on the closest one. Amazingly they didn't move so I tried a shot at another. They're small targets when you're trying to hit one. I wasn't sure if I had hit any but my wife thought one was running away kind of funny. By this time they had all disappeared. I realized that there was a spur road running parallel to the road we were on about 200 yards away. We went in on that road and lo and behold this one was on the road. After he had been hit he had got up and moved 3 times before he died. So 1 for sure and maybe another wounded. We could hear them howling all around us, even way off in the distance and no where near where we were. Part of the same pack? I don't know. This all took place at 9:30. Were they coming in on us because of our calling? I don't know that either. Someone with more knowledge would know that. About an hour later we were in another location and at least 10k from this and we could still hear them howling. A footnote on this to all you bear hunters out there. We have never seen so many blacks as this year. Some real bruisers too. I don't hunt them but it doesn't bode well for the moose calves and deer fawns next spring. So get up here all you bear hunters, there should be a decent spring hut in 2010!

Well done, a few more deer and moose will live this fall.

Wolves are really tough. I hit mine right behind the shoulders with a .300 Win Mag and he went quite a distance before expiring. Good job on shooting that one. Are you boiling the skull?

Nice hole in the side of that dog. Congrats. Saved a few ungulates for hunters. How many caribou will see through winter now?

Yeah, congratulations on getting your wolf I guess... But did you make an effort to see if the other one was wounded? Just because wolves eat ungulates and even our dogs, doesn't for a second give any of us hunters a right to treat them any differently than other game in my opinion. No animal should have to die slowly in the bush because of a hunter...

Yep.
In the regs they recommend using rubber gloves to avoid hydatid disease.

Good Job and a cool looking wolf!!

Of course I did. If I would have found it I would have finished it. Found no blood trail at all. If I would have hit any bone or any other part with that load it wouldn't have run very far. If I hit it at all I only clipped it.

Good job recovering the second one...

Don't quite see the point of your comment. I did look for blood trail etc and found none. If I had, I would have tried my best to locate it and finish it.

Do you legally have to take the kill, or just leave it in the bush?

Good job! The wolves have done a real number on the moose population where I hunt every year. I killed a small one 4 years ago and had a rug made. It's a great trophy and is currently in the Vernon Outdoor Store.

even tho wolf numbers are high across the province few of us get a crack at one. glad to see you were sucessful. I had my chance last week but shot high. last fall a friend of mine saw a cow and calf moose being chased by three wolves and got two of them.

First of all I don't shoot at anything that moves, I only shoot at what's legal. Second as stated earlier I looked for evidence of whether 2nd wolf had been hit. I found none after my best efforts so had to assume either a clean miss or simply clipped (my words). I can't do better than that. The regs allow the shooting of wolves in this MU with NBL. If that won't suffice then you'll have to call in the CSI crew.

Glad you made the effort.

A wolf with a bullet wound is much better than an unscathed wolf. NBL is in place for a very good reason.

So what do you do with it if you don't want a head or hide?
What is legal?
If you are just shooting them to thin the population do you have to take it?
I don't want something riding around with my 6 X 6 mule deer that I'm going to shoot this weekend that might have a disease.

BlacktailStalker

Unless a compulsory inspection is required in the region you shot it in, it can be left in the bush.
Its not hard to get $400 for a wolf pelt.

good on ya,shoot them all.numbers way to high.it's funny people complain that you shoot wolves, because they are the first to complain there is no game around in there hunting spots.how ironic.well done, don't hesitate to do it again because of this post.i would let the lead fly if i saw one!

So I make the comment, suported by another, and you guys jump down my shirt. Cute. HBC mafia unite. Kinda pissed at loser hunters lately that fling lead at anything that moves, then don't check up to find what they hit. Found a wolf pup shot and left for dead in the middle of the gregg crk road in 7-12 this weekend. Forgive me for being pissed off at loser hunters.

And that's pure class horshur, pure fcking class. I expect better from you.

You are quick to judge, but don't like being judged yourself.

Maybe you should refrain from making disparaging comments before knowing the facts. Had you not jumped to conclusions, you would not have received any negative comments yourself.

I have mixed feelings about shooting wolves (and bears), maybe not for me. But you can't argue with sustainable harvest, and legal is legal. I think all skins from predators should be carried out, or skulls kept.; my personal feelings about the subject.

Went hunting on quadra island on thanksgiving. Saw one buck in an area that wasn't legal. Wolves hit the island hard this season. Despite 3 being taken in 2006. Its not a big island, but was polluted with deer. Wolves (and all predators) certainly have high populations in BC right now.

Absolutely shoot on site, but as Hunters aren't we obliged to take responsible shots, calm and clean? i would think we should have more repect for animal life than most of the rest of the general public.

i hope to one day see one of these in my crosshairs , part of your basic kit should be 4-6 thin nylon or latex gloves all stuffed inside of the first one, disease is a real concern with carnivores. but with some garbage bags , and tarps to seperate them your wolf pelt / skull shouldnt contaminate your 6x6 mulie.

I spend a fair bit of time out hunting here and I`ve never seen a wolf or heard them howling.Tons of deer around, you would think there would be lots of wolves.I don`t see many bears either.Spotted a couple of cats though. And the odd coyote.I mostly hunt up St.Mary`s Lake way and Perry Creek and out past Meadowbrook. No wolves in 10 years of hunting.

Shooting this wolf is what you call controlling the population ,way to go ,I wish there where more of us hunters that could do the same thing as you did http://www.huntingbc.ca/forum/images/icons/icon12.gif .
