My 2009 season is starting off graet. I filled my LEH bull elk tag on the fourth day of our hunt with a nice 5x5 bull. It was awsome, I called him in to 30 yards. It is my first elk and I'm hooked. And to start the trip I nailed this huge 6x6 muley on the first day.

here's a bit of a storey to go with the pics. I got a LEH bull draw and was supercharged of the thought of getting a chance at a bull elk. I herd the third week of sept. is usually good for calling bulls, so I booked it off. (19-26) I decided to go over the weekend before and do some scouting around as I never hunted this area before.I stayed in the back of my truck and covered as much country as possible looking for elk sign. It was very hot out that weekend(30+). I didn't see much elk sign and was worried as I left for home. The weather was suppossed to stay hot all week. Not much sign of deer either, the area is mostly whitetail country. Sat. pull into camp stop I picked out the week before and my dad and I set up. Sunday morning we went to one of the spots I wanted to glass and call from at first light. No answers to the bugals, but at about 8am my dad spots a 3x2 muley buck. He was bedded down I guess and then stood up. Then my da said he thought he seen some movement in the brush and he thought it was another buck. They went out of sight, I was wondering if the other deer was a buck or not so I decided to hike up to the ridge they were on and find out. Once I crested the ridge I found a spot tp glass from and see if I could find them. I caught movement 250yards uphill from me on another ridge. It was the 3x2 cutting across and then rirht behind him came Mr.big. He stopped and turned down to look at me,I threw my gun up and the rest is history. One shot from my 300wsm to his neck and he never took another step.500 yard drag downhill to my truck and we were gone. Day two, missed a nice bull right at dark. Heartbreaking, I shot over his back three times. I have a rangefinder, but didn't use it(idiot). I got elk fever, rushing to get a shot as I thought they wouldn't stick around.I had a good rest on my shooting sticks and asked my dad how far he thiught they where away. He said about 550, I was OK with that and held where I needed to. Bang, nothing, bang nothing, bank, the third shot I seen hit the dirt over his back and they where gone. I was sick, thinking I have blown my chance at a elk. So I decided to pull my rangefinder out of my pack and check, ohh no 350 yards, what an idiot, thats why I bought the thing, bad judgement. Day three, nothing at all. Day four, glassed elk cresting a knob about 7am, they would not answer my calls so we decided to hike up and find them. 1 1/4 hours later we were crossing the last draw before the ridge when all hell brock loose. We jumped about 50 elk,it sounded like a bulldzer going through the bush. Then quiet, then a bugal, I was excited. We found a spot to hide and I started calling, he answered several times , then silence. I guess he was trying to sneak up on us and wind us,cause all of a sudden my dad says elk elk. I turn and look, he is 30yards from us , I turn and in one shot it was all over. Except for the high fives and the hours of work ahead of us.
