Looking for some input, anyone use Kevlar rope on their winches? Pros, cons? I know its alot stronger for the diameter of cable and have heard issues about binding. I have about 100ft of 3/8 I am thinking about putting on a warne 4000lb winch for my Samurai. Thanks

I looked into Kevlar ropes for a different application but found information regarding its use as winch cable. Kevlar is not very abrasion resistant and the fibers can cut into each other so Kevlar rope is good mainly for static purposes such as use as permanent anchor line not for applications where it is being constantly worked. Amsteel blue synthetic rope seems to be the choice for replacing steel cables on winch drums.
Some good info here: http://www.bc4x4.com/tech/2005/winch%20rope/

I think 3/8" is way over kill on a 4000# winch. I've got 3/8 on my 12,000# winch and I've stalled the winch but never broke a cable yet. You could probably get a ton of the Kevlar on that drum. K

Thanks 30.06 hunter for the link great info! Yes K 3/8 is going to to be over kill but it was free:wink::biggrin:

Lots of the guys I used to 4x4 with tried the synthetic and one of the problems of living here vs the desert is that mud and dirt get in the line and cause it to fray as was mentioned.

you also need to be careful to protect it from runover rocks or sharp objects that can also cause it to fray while pulling.

I think it has good applications in the dry desert wheeling areas but I think its usefulness for the northwest is limited.

You wont get much cable on the spool using line that thick .... and remember, the more wraps on the drum, the larger the diameter of the spool... witch in turn decreases your pulling power .

That 4000 lb winch probably only pulls about 1000 lb on the last wrap of cable .
You are better off getting the correct size cable and using all 50 ft of capacity on the drum ..
My warn 3000 lb uses 50 ft of 3/16 if I remember right.
