Sorry about the pics. I enlarged as much as I could I tried to doctor them up a bit to make it easier to see.
Either which way we weren't going to shoot this little gaffer as we thought it too small. Beautiful colour, milk chocolate with blonde highlights. Big mickey mouse ears but what do you think. Black bear colour phase or young grizzly?
The pics were taken in the Princeton area.
Hope he/she gets a little wiser come next hunting season as it wasn't to concerned about our presence, that is unless it's us who see it again next year, lol.

It's an Ewok. You were lucky as it could have been an ambush.

my awnser is the bear is not broadside to see a hump if it was there, if his shoulders are down and his hind is on a log for a young grizz given your pic it would be hard to tell.
but i would say black

a young color phase black bear, typical narrow triangle face, nose tip to ears and across ear to ear, perfect triangle,

Gee, thanks for all the replies. We thought black bear but the body looked like a young griz. Maybe because it was so fat and roly poly and the colour was grizzled looking. I agree that the ears are certainly more black bear type but we were wondering if he hadn't grown into them yet. One of the prettiest coloured bears I have seen in a long time. We'll be watching for him in the next few years.

Agree with the rest! Definitely a blond “black bear”-no hump and a triangular face. Probably recently on its own.
Check Elkdom’s avatar-head looks identical to any of the cubs except for the colour!.

Wow, some pretty confident answers considering the picture angle and quality......CI'd a 10 inch billy that the biologist told me was a Nanny until I showed him the balls on the hide.....after you conclude that thats a black bear under those conditions perhaps you can come count some sheep annuli in the field as well.

Can't quite see whether there is a hump on it or not, but it looks like an area that I was cutting firewood in about a month ago and had a griz. cross the road about 100 yds in front of me as I was driving out. Barely made out the hump on that one, but the silver tip gave him away as it stood out like a sore thumb. Been up there a couple of times since, but never did see him again. They have been seen expanding their territory from Manning Park & environs.
