I am a new member on this site, and have only been hunting SERIOUSLY for 4 years now. I just got back from my second trip ever hunting up in the interior (Coastal Blacktail hunter mostly...) and myself and my partners owe a lot of my success on that hunt to the members of this online community, and especially to Sawmill.

I read A LOT of posts on this site before heading up and I found a lot of great info on a lot of areas. I also sent off some private messages to a few guys who sounded like they knew the areas I was interested in, and I got some very helpful replies.

My father and I had the pleasure of meeting Sawmill (Joe) near Cranbrook where he lives, and I have to say, he is a prince among men and hunters. Joe welcomed us into his house, we had a short visit and looked over some great racks he has in his basement, and then he took us on a little tour of a local area and gave us an idea of where we could find some elk and whitetails.

It was a dream of my father's to get a nice dry cow (as he just turned 65) because he remembered my grandfather always going into the interior to get one when my dad was a child. They never got to go together... so here I was with my dad to get it done. We had only 4 days to scout before rifle season - my crossbow in hand - and 6 days to get the job done once rifle season started. Most of the guys and gals on here know that if it wasn't for the help I received from Joe and many other members on this site, we would have never got the HUGE cow we connected with on our second last day, as we weren't interested in shooting an elk on some farmers field... This was the biggest cow in the herd and it was taken still hunting in thick timber near the herd's water source around 7:30 am. There was also a nice bull who turned out to be a barely legal 5x6, but he was moving too fast to see the inch and a half 6th tine in the timber.... another story all together.

Anyways, my father and I, along with our other hunting partner had the trip of a lifetime (also got a nice whitetail buck) and we will definitely be back to the interior next year. We owe a lot of our success to Sawmill, and many others whom I won't mention so they don't get the same barrage of messages Joe is about to get once some people read this post and try to hunt him down and move in with him! Sorry Joe... you are a class A guy, and a true gentleman among hunters.

Thanks to you all, and hope the season is good to you!

Here are a few pics from scouting in the interior, the only pic I have of the cow so far, and a few pics from last weekend as well...

I don't have any pics of the bucks we saw in the interior as my hands were on my rifle or bow instead of the camera!

Sounds like the trip of a life time! It's great to hear your father connected with a decent Elk, you guys got a buck, man you'll never forget this hunt! From the sounds of things, Sawmill is the guy to hook up with! Congrats to all who helped you with a very successful hunt!!!

Nicely done. Your mention of your dad reminded me of my friend, new hunter, who is going hunting with me over the Thanksgiving weekend. That is the same weekend his dad used to hunt when he was a kid. This will be an emotional weekend for him too as his Dad passed away a number of years back and he's recently received his father's firearms given back to him and will be hunting with his Dad's 30/30. That weekend was always the weekend his Dad was away and also his, my buddy's, birthday.
It should be a good time, especially if we are successful.

PS: You're right. This forum has a lot of guys who are very helpful and willing to help new guys trying to get into the sport be successful.

I was told by a hunter that you should never use water on your game meat as it introduces micro bacteria into your meat which can cause spoiling, just wanted to mention it incase you've never heard of that.

Sweet pics and congrats to you on a great trip :)

Hadn't heard of it, but was certainly wondering if there were any problems associated with it, and meant to ask on here... I noticed a bit of discoloration on the exposed meat where the water contacted of course but don't know if this is a problem? hadn't split the pelvis yet (did that after the rinse) so water only really contacted inside the body cavity.

Thanks for the info though! any other thoughts guys/gals??
