Gilmore and I, his dad and another friend went to investigate his Reg 3 LEH sheep tag on opening day. They got there the on Saturday, I rolled up early Sunday morning. They had split up to take a look, and only his dad saw some rams, that had disappeared. Further investigation was required.

We spent most of the rest of the morning trying to locate the group of 4 rams he had seen. After a fruitless search, we headed back for some breakfast at about 11AM. Breakfast was great, especially as I didn't have to cook it.

We headed back out, and finally the rams were located, a long way away.

We kept watching them for awhile as they milled around, feeding. 2 looked legal, but hard to tell how big they were.

Eventually they started moving in the other direction, away from us. We headed back out quickly, to get ahead of them. When we arrived, we expected tat we would have to wait until they showed up. Well, they moved a little faster than we thought and were right under us!

We had the luxury of checking them out at 150 yards. One, maybe 2 were legal.

An easy shot presented itself at the largest ram

We had been sitting quietly for about 20 minutes observing the rams and taking pictures, and when we determined the legality, he asked me what I thought and I said I thought he should be sure it's the ram he wants.

But it was opening day, and he wasn't quite what Gilmore was looking for, (which I agreed with) so we packed up and hiked back up the to the top, and that was the end of opening day sheep hunting!

Gate ....

Looking forward to the rest of the story .......

Kind of feeling like the lucky guy with the LEH might get his this year ......

Great pic's !! Keep em coming .... till this guy gets his Ram !

I've been putting in for those Californians with ZERO success for 2 long. And sure wish I had started hunting them earlier in life, it's a great hunt.

Good luck to the guy if it's not on the ground already.

Good pass Gate!

Maybe a last day ram but not the first day.

I hope Gilmore milks his hunt and enjoys every day. We all know these draws don't come around very often.

He will have success.

Thanks for posting the photos up Clarke.

We did everything but shoot it and pack it out, so it was pretty exciting none the less. The adrenaline was pumping and it was close, the safety was OFF at one point. I'm glad I passed, and right now it seems there are a few rams around if you know where to look which to me is good sign this eary in the season. For now I feel good about my decision... I may be kicking my ass come Oct. 21 if I have still haven't cut my tag though.:-D

All in all a great opening day spent with my Dad and some good friends. My Dad and I don't get to hunt as much together as we'd like as the farm usually requires one of us to be here, so for me yesterday was awesome.

For a sec there I thought you were sayin' that Gatehouse is your Dad, which would make Todbartell your Grand-dad, etc.

Then I went back to Clarke's first post saying he was with you and your Dad...phew!
