This summer has brought Peter and I many visiting relatives from Denmark. We had his cousin here for 3 weeks, travelling all over BC on his (their) honeymoon, they just left yesterday to go back home. 2 weeks ago, his young cousin came to Canada to live with us for 2 months, as she is the same age as our kids and loved her last visit to Canada 2 years ago. Cille has never been fishing before, so Peter decided to take her out on the boat for her first ever experience. We purchased her non-resident fishing license with salmon stamp and off they went with Azshia and Josh (Another newbie fisherman, this was his 2nd time out). After a slow start on the river (boat was not co-operating), they were into fish left right and centre. Azshia and Josh limited out on their salmon (both first timers for catching salmon) and then Cille began her try. She was laughing and panicking at the same time asking what do I do and being coached by Peter and Azshia how to bring in her first ever salmon (first ever fish). Another moment of joy for Peter to bring fishing into the life of someone who would never be given the opportunity any other time. She loved it and can't wait to go again while she is here with us. After limiting out on salmon, they decided to try some sturgeon fishing, no sooner getting set up and the rod into the water, Josh noticed some action on one of the rods. Oh this rod was definitely in for a long fight, for over an hour between 3 people taking turns on the rod, they get a big bubbling fish coming to the surface to just barely break the water. A hint of a dinosaur, bigger than ever seen is thrashing away with the rod. Cille is taking pictures while Azshia. Josh and at one point even Peter are trying to bring this fish to the boat. Sensing the need to go carefully to shore with the fish, Peter pulls anchor and heads that slow purr to bring the fish safe to the shoreline. Unfortunately the fish manage to be the success in this fight and broke free but not before a pic of his tail came through the water surface to indicate he was a biggun. Cille was amazed, she never saw a fish so big, estimated in the double digits.

Cille is looking forward to fishing again when we take her to the cabin on thanksgiving, I think when she goes back to Denmark she will be looking for some fishing partners.

Next up Peter's aunt and uncle just arrived and more relatives will be arriving this weeks as we have a large celebration for Peter's sister's 25th wedding anniversary, so look out BC we are being invaded by the Danes. lol

Great pictures Ali. Looks like you guys had fun. You think the sturgeon might have been foul hooked? Happens a lot at this time of the year. I have had it happen to me, you think you have the grand daddy and then it is just a foul hooked 7 or 8 footer.

hahahahaha - we have her hooked people - Cille woke up this morning , her body aching and all she says was OMGosh I can't wait to do that again, this sore muscles are so worth it - I told her to wait until we bbq her salmon and she can say she caught supper. Her birthday is Oct 4 and she will be 19 and her grandparents just arrived from Denmark so we will be having a huge celebration for her and her salmon will be part of her birthday meal :)

I/we are so proud of her.

thanks y'all for you wonderfully positive comments

That's a good pic! Maybe a stupid question but do you have to release sturgeon? I imagine some of those dinosaurs have been caught multiple times. In proportion to the foot, and back of the boat that fish looks BIG.

Carl, sturgeon are catch and release only and no it wasn't a stupid question - all questions when asked should be given an answer to the best of one's knowledge :)

What do you do with a fish as big as that one though? I've seen the pics of guys on the beach, with monster sturgeon and they are holding it in the water... Do you just beach the boat? or pull it up alongside, take your pics and unhook? cut the line?

I was fishing with my buddies in deep cove quite a few years ago, jigging, just being kids. We got into a school of dogfish and were having fun... I thought I'd hooked bottom and just kept reefing on it. Sure enough slowly from the depths, came up a HUGE shark of somekind, I am assuming a six gill... It was bigger then our little aluminum tin can so I panicked and gave my buddy the rod, lol... He took one look over the edge and saw this freakish thing coming up, panicked as well, and just threw the rod overboard!

His dad was mighty pissed we chucked one of his expensive halibut rods and to this day thinks we are full of shit. True story though :)

heheheheh love the story

catch and release of a large sturgeon is usually the boat lets go of the anchor or you haul the anchor asap and you follow the fish, reeling it in as you go and when you see it begin to break surface the boat slowly head into the shore, you want to be sure to keep the fish out of as much stress as possible considering it, most guys once they get the boat to shore will tie up, anchor up and wade out to the water to take a quick photo with the fish and then cut it loose - as big as these giants are they are fighters when they have to be and love to jump but get them close to shore and they become so docile (could be the fight that quiets them down) but once they are released you watch them almost give you a smile so you can meet them on another day - they are like releasing any fish actually depending on how they are hooked, we also have quick release connectors on the line so there isnt any more trauma to the fish

they are amazing creatures to catch so we want to be as respectful to this fish and fisherie as we can in hopes to have generations enjoy the sturgeon of our rivers.
