We are back from my wife's LEH Elk hunt, first morning we cow called and had a calf come within several feet of us, that evening we seen a couple cows and got a glimps of a bull. With the warm weather they did not seem to be bugling or responding. The second day was uneventful other than seeing a big bull moose and a small mule deer buck. The next evening we returned to the spot we seen the cows and bull, just before dark we cow called and almost imediatly we heard a bull respond with a weird half bugle. The bull came to within about 10 - 15 yards and stood broad side offering my wife with a perfect shot. Then the work began it took us 8 hours to get him out of the bush into the truck. All in all it was a great hunt and she was very excited to get her first Elk.

Then the work began it took us 8 hours to get him out of the bush into the truck.

Just curious what took eight hours as its obvious by the half and elk (with the front feet) in the truck that there was no packing involved. Did you spend that long trying to get the ATV or truck to the animal???

Nice elk, lots of character

Maybe the front end loader is at home after the fact but the question still lies in how half an elk got in the truck in the first place after a pack job :)

Yes the tractor was used to get the elk from the pick up to the cooler. It took 8 hours because I figured we would cut him in half and then skid him out with the bike but we could not get close enough so we drug each half down through the block by hand until we got him to were we could reach him with the bike winch. And due to the fact that it was dark by the time we got him gutted, neither dragging him or winching him were easy tasks to say the least, and ya it would have been a bit easier had I cut the feet off but we did not think of it till after the fact .As for how we got each half into the truck,I laid the tailgate on an angle from the bumper to the ground using it as a ramp and we winched it up into the back of the truck using the double block winch .By that time it was 4 am .We were exhausted but we got it done.

Sounds like you used your head to get him out then....

Big bodied *******....Went what, prolly close to 700lbs live I'm guessing?

Will make for an interesting mount.
