Thanks to so many good people on the site, 308 Lover and Lodgepole (shown here} were successful on the third day of their hunt in 5-13B
As the "Tale of Two Cities" starts: "It was the best of times-it was the worst of times". We had an awesome heavy frost on the second day, but thenthe temp. soared. Wouldn't you know we scored this 2X3 Immy on the morning of the hottest day on record---30 degrees Celsius. Then it was a race against the heat and bugs and we packed it out to the truck up a very steep slope. Luckily he fell in the shade, but quartering him for the pack board subjected us to heavy swarms of biting bugs. It was a 4 hour job, but thanks to Marc's help at the Fish Pot Lake Resort, we had the meat cleaned up and bagged in cheezecloth in no time. Then we raced to the MGMeat shop in Quesnel, where we saw it go into the cooler! Yaaah Baby! (One of the best parts? The butcher is cutting for 45 cents a pound and is an awesome person to deal with) Oh Yes,---we did have a few pops back in camp! LOL

Don't old farts have all the time in the world to cut your own?? At least that's what I'm hoping for when I become a OF!!

Well done gang. An inspiration to us soon to be "Old Farts"

Water is the key, of course. But in the heat they stay in the shaded areas, and don't move far. High ground is way too dry. You may have to spend some gas money and just hunt the magic hours 6:30 Am until 8:30 AM, then 6:30 PM until dark. During those times is the only movement we saw (2 cow/calf pairs, one monster bull with "red" antlers newly scraped (too shy to come out--ran instantly), One other Immy late eve., then this guy(about a 2 yr old) with a big cow.) Noit bad for 2 old farts. Ha! Ha!

Incidentally. Keep on your long sleeves while cleaning moose. I was chewed up something fierce by black flies, deer flies, (even mosquitos) and one hornet. We figure some of the biters were from the moose--I almost never itch or show reaction to the average bloodsucker, but these left big welts on my neck and forearms. I'm dosing them with After Bite and drinking scotch to dull the itch.

Most sane hunters stayed home. We saw one pickup with two guys from our zone, but heavy hauling was in progress there--so we were lucky to have hunted on the
sunday--EXCEPT for the insanely hot weather.

Well done. Nothing like a successful hunt made including blood, sweat, and tears. (of joy!) I'm sure you're already thinking about next season.....

You are sooo right. Just for the record, we are both 67, and John proved he can pack with the best! He carried his pack in that heat, and revelled at the experience, while I did the butchering and prepped the pack loads. We're not such "old" farts as one might think! Ha! Ha!

Replying to M.Potzold: The usual time for hot meat is 5 hours--from the time of kill to get it cool. The colder the air of course, the faster it cools at first. Our recipe has always been to wash down with a cup of vinegar to 3 or 4 gallons of water--it repels the bugs well, and the acidic part seems to help when rubbing loose hair and other particles from the meat. In today's modern butcher shop cleanliness rules! We took precious time to clean up our meat and cover with cheezecloth--it brings tears to the eyes of a good butcher--LOL Expect poor results if you take dirty meat to ANY butcher.

Now that our meat will not be cut until Sep. 23rd, we're trying to get John's half to Vancouver and then to Nanaimo (lives in Courtenay). Anyone out there shipped frozen meat? (It will be boxed in my freezer in Prince George after the 23rd)

Dry ice and lots of newspaper! PG to Nanimo, with half a moose?? Might be cheaper to make a power trip to Van, meet at the ferry??

You may be right Moosin. We were thinking of Vancouver first, then Nanaimo ferry after a night in the freezer .(It's an Immy, so only 2 or 3 boxes would be half)

By the way--can you ship freight on the ferry for pickup on the other side or do we have to use the bus depot (unattended bags etc. etc. )?

We're dealing with MGM Meats on the south side of Quesnel across from the RV sales out pasat Wall Mart etc. Name is Greg Marcoux and he dropped his prices to get more hunters out. He's a bit less handy, but a great guy.

Got my meat today from MGM in Quesnel. A very professional job at low cost. Every package neatly wrapped and marked. See my post called "A taste of Immy). My partner has solved the transport of his meat from Quesnel to Courtenay because "He just happened to have a friend fishing nearby" who'll take it all the way home! Talk about Karma! Thanks again Greg for a GEAT CUTTING JOB!

thanks '47! You always have a positive thing to say! After reading of your elk maratho, I believe hunting with you would be elk hunters heaven. Looking forward to seniors season in the EK's. Never hunted there.

Say Lodgepole, did you get a tag this year or was that too exciting last time? Drop a line to the gang here on the site.
