Shot a small Mulie buck on opening day near Hixon. This guy was still in Velvet. As I have only hunted moose in the past I didnt give it much thought but have since noticed that of all the pictures that have been posted, some in this area, none of them have been in Velvet. Any insight, would it have anything to do with how old the animal was??

Young animals tend to hold onto their velvet a bit longer, especially yearlings. It's not uncommon to get immature bull moose or spike/2-point mulies still in velvet during the first two weeks of september.

I think that it just depends on the animal, my buddy killed a big mule deer a couple of days ago that was still in full velvet.

You'll even find deer that are both sexes and have velvet antlers all year.
Hermaphrodite is the word....

The ones we seen last week still had there fun fur! I'd think they should be rubbing it off pretty quick.

I've shot both deer and moose around Hixon (and elsewhere) in the beginning of the season that were still in velvet. I think it's normal that early.

Velvet has to do with testosterone production of an animal. I think the younger ones and the older ones keep thier velvet longer.
