View Full Version : My first 6 point bull elk.

Well I finally managed to connect on a 6 point bull yesterday. It all started the week before during the bow season when my partner and I came oh so close to closing the deal on a nice 6 point bull. After a hour of calling I finally managed to get the bull with bow range, but the bull spooked before my partner could get a shot off:sad:. Here are some pics of the bull through our spotter.

After a week of replaying that hunt we headed off on our 3 hour drive to our spot. We had high hopes of reconnecting with the same bull from the week before. Day 1 only produced one 5 point bull and no bugles:sad:. We made plans that night to hunt elk in the morning and then head high for Mule deer, thinking the elk had left our spot.

We woke up to the sound of elk bugling and they were close to our camp....yee haww! We quickly got our gear and headed off in the direction of the closest bull. On the way there we spotted a nice bull on the edge of a swamp. We estimated him near 330, but couldn't get a shot off before he walked into the timber.

Meanwhile the other bull was bugling below us in some god awful blowdown/devils club mess. This bull wasn't coming in and I decided to go after him. After 2 hours of chasing the bull across the valley I finally managed to turn the bull around. I was making my way up a steep hill when he bugled right above me. I looked up and saw a bull come into the opening above me and scrambled behind a small Balsam. I quickly peered around the tree and counted 6 points, but didn't have a clear shot. I had to move because he caught me in a tough spot. I waited as long as I could and made 2 steps uphill to get into better position. The bull was looking directly at me when I peered around the tree and shot the bull in the neck. The rest is history except the UGLY 12 hour pack out, but it was worth it. Hope you enjoy the pics.

Thanks Brambles for all your help.

Yup. Really great hunt. The best thing about the pack out was the END:biggrin:. Lots of good memories. I just wish fuel prices weren't sooo high as I'd like to go back and try for that bigger bull, but 3 hours each way eats up a fair amount of fuel and time.

I would be nice if we could find a place like that closer to home:roll: And it really sucks when you got Grizz breathing down your neck and trying to steal your friggen animal too:cool: Whats with all the friggen bears over there anyways:eek:

Damn thats a fine looking rifle:biggrin:

Here's a few things we learned,

-Cheese cloth meat bags, the type you buy at walmart SUCK. We are gonna make our own cotton bags now.
-Blowflys SUCK
-Hot spots on your feet after 12 hours of packin SUCK
-Eberlestock J107 CAN take the weight, you can fit a deboned hind quarter AND front quarter in the main compartment.
-Hiking poles ROCK!!
-Tie Flagging tape on everything, including newly purchased electronic equipment

But everything said and done, I had a great time and would do it again in a heartbeat.

what did you shoot that guy with?

I shot this bull with my Remington 280 mountain rifle. I was using 140 grain bullets. I recently had the wood stock replaced with a synthetic stock. Brambles did a heck of a job and now the gun is a serious tack driver.

Glad to hear you made up for the archery miss!8)

Great looking bull!

Meat sacks......I had my wife made up a bunch for our caribou hunts....muslin with draws strings...worked well8)...but I also bought a few off 2-Stroke....bigger size for elk quarters(big enough for leaving the bone in if you're close enough to the truck/atv) and wash up really nice.

Congrats again Ken!

Hunter1947,

Thanks for the compliment. No I'm not getting a mount done, mainly because of limited space. He is a nice bull, just breaks 300 gross, and I'm very happy with him. I will probably mount a bull, if he breaks 350. I have seen several, just need the LEH:smile:.

Question for you. This bull had next to no ivories. Does this mean it was an old bull?

You got that right the smaller the ivories the older the bull ,darn I wish they the wildlife branch still did the ageing of the bulls with the tooth you sent to them ,I have hunting albums with lots of the return ages of the bulls i shot over my elk hunting days as for the crests that came back with the return age of the elk ..
