I recently bought a Nikon fieldscope III ED 20-60 x 60mm for my upcoming goat hunt. I may be using my current tripod, an older Slik with 3 way head. If I find mself in the market for a new tripod & head what should I be looking at in a tripod head? Pros and Cons for 3way, ball, or fluid manufacturers good and bad, weight rating, great value (cost / function) ?

I just bought the Slik Sprint mini www.adorama.com/SLSPMB.html Like it a lot. Light, very versatile heights...from 6" to 40". Off course, it is less stable as you raise the height. For my purposes, its just fine. They don't distribute this model in Canada so I ordered from Adorama.

I like the ball head for its quickness but dislike it for its difficulty in fine tuning views at high mag. So, I got both!

I took a three way micro adjustable head and had an aluminum adapter made up at a local machine shop that screws on to my ball head. I can now quickly position the spotting scope to the area I want to view, lock it in and then make very fine vertical/horizontal adjustments with the micro adjustable 3 way.

wish I could remember the model...but there is a mini-video head by Manfrotto that is liquid. rock solid. I would buy it without hesitating if I needed something like that.
