I guess that I am a little bored tonight post dinner and waiting for my first hunting day in the south (not till Friday, chasing blues). As such I have written down a very few short, and not that well written versus in anticipation of tomorrows GOS opening for the southern part of the province. Please feel free to add in some verbage to complete this little poem. For me, it is an attempt to break up the monotony of the "how many critters will be stacked up" threads that tend to clutter up opening day.

Good luck to all in '09.

T'was the night before opening:

T'was the night before opening, and all through the province were the sounds of guns being polished.

Dreams of past falls drifted through most minds, with the thoughts of hunts future leaving the past behind.

Anticipation of events as yet to come, wanderd through hunters minds like a good bottle of rum

........ Who's next to chime in????

Ok, never paid attention in poetry class but here goes..............

This 'll be me tomorrow.........

0330 the alarm clock awakes,
tip toe down the stairs,
no thumping to make,

careful with the the guns,
as we load up the rig,
head down the highway,
going like a greased pig,

the mountains are calling
the air a crisp breeze
fall soon approaching
splendor in the leaves

survey the silence
quiet, a Buck comes this way...
can't get any better,
it's opening day !

Yeah I cant wait either, heading out friday afternoon to set up camp for saturdays blacktail opening. Do a bit of glassing the night before and hopefully sneak back in and hammer something in the morning.

In search of the mature elusive blacktail, 5 years plus of age,
will find me glassing 5 feet of fireweed and clearcuts, not sage.
If the rising sun and morning light sends that blacktail to bed,
I'll still hunt rock bluffs and timber before I poke him with lead.
Then sharp knives and cape skinning will be the beginning
then a loaded Kifaru G2 and hike out is what I will do,
Now, I leave the next line for you...

with the courage to continue the whitetail quest,
a true hunters paradise schooling the futures best,
i pack my scabard and cross my chest
for the frankentine fantom,
will be taken by the one who never rests

Good work8-)

Do not twitter,
over an illegal critter,
with patience & luck
you'll tag that big buck

There were two men in a truck,
headin out to try their luck.
A moose or an elk is the prey of choice,
"shhhhh quiet", they might hear your voice!!
With hopes of "kaboom" ringing in their ears,
just their luck all they see are deers.
Deer are nice to see one guy reasons,
"ah yes" says the other but they're are out of season.
So with time running out, on their trek north,
the skies open up and they have to abort.
So they head back home memories of elk a talkin,
thinkin that maybe there would be more elk if they'de done more walkin??

This sums up my hunting season so far!! Moosin

The woods were so still
You could hear even a mouse
I walked up a small hill
And shot dead a fine grouse

It fell to the ground
A spaniel ran ahead
The dog brought it round
and gave it up dead

Here's my contribution again "spruced" up a bit

The woods were still
The river was dowse
I hiked a small hill
And flushed a fine grouse

It fell to the ground
A dog charged ahead
He brought it round
And gave it up dead

Grouse are small
Moose are huge
somethings rhyme
and somethings don`t

T'was the night before Opening
I was anxious as shit
Never shot an Elk before
Maybe this time was it.

The gear was all packed
The rig loaded good to go
Probably won't get any sleep
The clock ticks awful slow.

Been practicing my bugling,
But I sound more like a duck
Thank God for 'Hoochie-Mama's'
"Hey Big-Boy... wanna fuc...

After two days of frost
the elk are anything bothered, hot
'big boy' bugles , ...bugled over!
hes coming in now, hoochie all over
size him up real slow, take your time
hes angry don't you know
hold that rifle to your shoulder,
breath, hold, and let it go
one last comanding call,
a matriarch once, but nevermore
with eyes on the spot i untie,
retrieve my stock
a vision splendor, a hunt well done
meat in the freezer, thank you god
this is fun
