I, like many other bow hunters this season, have just returned from the koots after chasing the elusive elk in the area. I was able to get away for 8 days while my wife graciously mothered our 4 week old son. Unfotunately the weather was not in our favour as it was 25 + degrees the entire trip and the ground was very crunchy.
Long story short, had a single sighting of a cow + calf on my way back to camp near the end of my trip and was able to close the distance to 50meters on the calf - however I was jogging for 100-150 meters alongside them until they chose to cross the road so I elected not to take the shot.
I saw numerous deer and spooked even more while still hunting. My only chance at a shot came while driving out of camp on the way home where a WT doe was munching just inside the tree line. My buddy ranged her at 20 meters and I found a hole to punch an arrow through. She fell over on the spot but got up and ran for roughly 150-200 meters where she decided she had had enough and piled up. Hit her in the spine/ upper lungs (both). I dont know if it was the initial shot that wrecked her lungs or the snapped off arrow left inside her while she was running although the blood trail started immediatley. Here are a few pics from the trip.

Congratulations on your first archery deer! She'll taste just great. Pretty neat how the arrow 'blew' thru the vertebrae right up to the fletching.

Thanks for the pics and the story.

Jehiah,

Glad to see you guys connected. I recognized Bob in the grouse photo. I met you guys in Starbucks just before the season opened. My brothers son was shooting one of Bob's long bows and shooting it real well. Pass along a hello to those guys for me. Thanks.
