Successful elk hunt

Opening morning, got on a bull at first light just like last year. We moved in and brought him in to 80 yards, and my father in law dropped him with 300 Win Mag & 168 gr Barnes TSX. 600 lbs on the hooks :D

impressive. interesting way the bullet deformed and didn't seem to expand as it should have?

expanded fine, just blew all the petals off, which is common with an X bullet when impact velocity is close to 3000 fps. The bullet hit dead center in the lower neck, and was recovered behind the shoulder, 18" penetration. Tough going for any bullet, I'd hate to see what a Hornady, Berger, or Sierra would of done :shock:

well I think you're best off aiming low in the neck where the dark mane of the bull and his tan body meet. I had this same shot angle on my first elk in 2007 and it had the same result (30-06 w/ 165gr Accubonds). A hit too high and I think you'll run the risk of your bullet doing alot of meat damage in its path through the upper chest. A lower one avoids most of this, we only lost about 5 lbs of meat in the lower neck area to the TSX "blackberry jam"

my camera says 6:50am for the first sighting of him, kill shot @ 6:57am. When we first heard him bugle it was 6:10am and then we began to swing around and get the wind in our face and cow call our way into his path :grin:

Panasonic S26 cam, 70x optical zoom. Got it for $400, its a nice little unit
